G'day Everyone!

Black & Tan wrap-up

Wouldn't you know it … I try to give everyone the right advice on what to ride in the Black and Tan and who's the only wally to get a flat? Me! No wonder I barrack for St Kilda.

It was a really good race anyway. All eight of us who rode enjoyed it … particularly Steve Plummer who rode away from the rest of us. I found a 10-speed SRAM chain for his main prize. Stefan won a pair of SRAM socks for second and Bakks got a thermal coffee cup for third (he gets beaten by two but is the only one to get a cup!)

I went for a ride later in the afternoon (seeing as my morning ride was cut so short) and found another course for the next Black & Tan. This will give the race the facilities (toilets, change rooms) at the start at the Roadhouse and a quieter, safer road to finish on (Graves Road.) This version is 30km but has two dirt sections! Next time …Click Here

Remember Bruce, if you're going to run standard road tyres on the dirt, use a slightly heavier, thicker tube. D'oh!

M2M roller derby

There's a bush market in Highett Street this Saturday and the Murray to Moyne team wants to hold a roller derby to raise funds. But they don't have any riders yet.

Call Michelle on 0438 042 246 to book your ride time. (If she's at work and can't answer her phone, please leave a message.)

Traffic Managers

Our club needs a few Qualified Traffic Controllers. During the recent road races as part of the Tour de Flavour festival, we almost didn't have enough 'lollipop people', so the Sunday morning road race was in doubt just a few days beforehand. So for the events to go ahead in 2012 we need you to get qualified.

As I've mentioned to a few of you lately, Mansfield Shire have offered to pay for you to do a one-day course to become a Qualified Traffic Controller. The club needs about 12 of you to get qualified.

So far, I've been underwhelmed by the response. (Thank you to the single member who has put their hand up!)

To make sure the Criterium and Road Race can be held next March (and to even help out other community groups in case they need it sometimes) please email me - bruce@bikevents.com.au - as soon as you can.

Amstel Gold Race finish

In case you weren't aware, Simon Gerrans finished third in last night's Amstel Gold Race. Great effort!

Here are the closing kilometres - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xi9oel_amstel-gold-closing-kilometres_sport#from=embed

If you don't have pay-TV, try the links from Podium Cafe - as each of these European races start they list the websites which carry TV coverage - www.podiumcafe.com

Club kit update

New prices are now on the club kit page; we've dropped the prices on jerseys, knicks and bib knicks that are in stock. Email Tim Ross - Tim.Ross@proactivetax.com.au - if you'd like anything; especially the beautifully warm, long sleeve, fleece tops. You'll need one very soon!

Club website subscription

Finally, we'll send out some information soon on subscribing to the website.

It means that instead of me sending me an email to everyone, you'll get an automatic email when the Latest News page on the website is updated. There'll also be the same thing for important updates like a last minute time or venue change.

This will make it much easier for everyone. And it's really, really easy to do.

More on this soon...

That's all for now … see you out there.

Cheers,

Bruce Halket.

G'day Everyone!

"Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." ~ John F Kennedy.

Black & Tan race this Sunday

Don't forget … we did race this Sunday!
Bit of a change from the advertised start. Start is now on the corner of Pollards (Ogilivies) and Mansfield to Woods Point Roads. Registration from 9.15 and race starts at 10.00 - because entries aren't due two days beforehand, the earlier registration is to allow time to organise the handicaps, so please be on time.
Here is the course:Click Here.

Finish is the usual Buller Road finish line at Walsh's driveway.
I'll dig through the club box of goodies and find some good prizes.

As I mentioned before, I have a pair of 28mm tyres available to anyone who wants them for the day. They might be slightly heavier than your usual tyre but a heavy, full tyre is faster than a light, flat one.
Wil also has a pair of 25mm tyres available if anyone wants to borrow them - Wilsonpsych@bigpond.com - he won't need them!

Somersaults and shoulders

Part 1
Speaking of Wil, he's done a shoulder. Last Monday he was out on Howes Creek Road with John Eisner and Dave Clark when they came across a kangaroo in the middle of the road. After a somersault off the road and into a ditch, Wil had damaged his left shoulder and will be off the bike for about 6 weeks. This pic - Click Here - shows him on his best behaviour while Dr. Wil Twycross checks him out.
All the best for a speedy recovery Wil.
Part 2
Tim Chadd finally got back onto the bike last week and did his first race in 9 months. He clipped a stump on his left with his pedal, went over the bars, down the hill and hit a tree on his right.
This image - click here - shows the damage done and this image - click here - shows the surgical repairs. If anyone is doing any repair work at home and needs a screw or two, give Tim a call. He has 22 new ones and will likely have a few spares available soon. Not for the next 7 weeks admittedly but maybe after that.
All the best for you too Tim!

Club kit update

Firstly, if anyone is interested in winter club clothing, please send Tim an email - Tim.Ross@proactivetax.com.au - asap. We're considering placing an order for long sleeve fleece tops, wind vests and arm warmers. We need an indication by the end of April.
Secondly, the club kit has moved. Tim is now the Minister of Club Kit. If you'd like to purchase a pair of knicks, jersey or socks, which are all currently in stock, email Tim to arrange to try some on.
The website club kit page will be updated with new prices soon too.

Rail Trail Construction Update

Wrights Earthmoving has commenced construction of the pathway starting at Homewood this week. Construction will take place from Homewood to Yea, approximately 8.8 kilometres most of which can be seen from the Goulburn Valley Highway. This section will connect with the popular Yea Station Precinct and Skatepark areas.
Bridge rebuilds are continuing throughout the three Shires and work on four toilet sites started this week.
The weather has been perfect for Steve Curnow to start revegetation works in the Mansfield Shire on the first of sites across the project.
The last major tender to be awarded is for the Granite Underpass and this tender will close late April. The Granite Underpass will be built under the Goulburn Valley Highway approximately 1 kilometre east of Trawool Resort. The underpass has VicRoads approval and is necessary due to the poor sight lines on the highway.

That's all for now … see you out there.
Cheers,
Bruce Halket.

G'day Everyone!

The Black & Tan course

It looks like I won't be here next weekend, so I went for a ride around the 'Black & Tan' course today, just to have a good look. It's great! The road is in good nick all the way around, even the dirt section.
Now, I understand a few of you are a bit hesitant about this race because of the dirt. Well … harden up Princess!
Here's the course: - CLICK HERE

It's only 4km of dirt over the 31km course and the dirt road is in really good condition. The only corrugations I could find today were at the Jamieson end of the dirt and it's only a very small section. The rest of it is fine. You might just have to pick your line a bit more carefully than you normally do on the road. (If you ride a mountain bike sometimes, you'll be used to this.)
I hear on the grapevine that some of you may be considering using your mountain bike. That'll be good on the dirt but the other 27km of bitumen will be slow on the mountain bike.
Tyre choice might be important if you're not confident on the dirt. I'm using these tyres - CLICK HERE - but only because I already had them. (I think Shannon still has a pair in stock too.) I figure the little textured bits on the sides might give me a little grip around the corners yet they'll be good on the road. (I have no proof of this, I'm only guessing.) If there was more than 4km of dirt, I'd probably prefer them to be either 25mm or 28mm. But 23mm will be fine for just 4km of dirt.
I have a pair of 28mm tyres with a slight tread if anyone wants to borrow them. I was going to use them but I think they'll be a bit heavy.
With two weeks before the race, call in to see Shannon and hassle him about what tyres he can get in for you.
If you're still not sure, think of Hubert Opperman and all his exploits … nearly all his riding was on dirt roads. Think about the recent Strade Bianchi in Italy and the stage of last year's Giro on the same roads which Cadel Evans won. Think about how smooth and easy that 4km of dirt will be compared to the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix next weekend. (And don't forget the Tour of Flanders tonight!)

Don't forget, next Saturday morning's bunch ride is scheduled to go over the course so everyone gets a look at the Black & Tan before we race on it on Sunday 17 April.

That's all for now … see you at the MAC tomorrow night for the Dirt Crits presentation and Life Cycles.
Cheers,
Bruce Halket.

Bunch ride Saturday 9 April - Black & Tan course

Part of next Saturday's bunch ride will include the Chapel Hill Road / Hearns Road section which will be raced on the following weekend for the Black & Tan Handicap.

Come and see for yourself that it's not that difficult to ride your road bike on a dirt road.

Change of time for bunch rides

I announced on Thursday night that weekend bunch rides will now change to 9am. Sorry, I jumped the gun a bit there.

Bunch rides will change to 9am in May, not April.

Dirt Crit presentations start at 6pm – nibbles and drinks on offer – all are welcome.
The movie starts 7pm – cost is $20 for adults, $10 for kids.
We’ll kick off the viewing with The Dirty Dozen (starring our very own Shannon Rademaker and Dan MacMunn) ... followed by the spectacular Life Cycles! (It's meant to be a really great bike movie - worth a look, even for roadies!)
Seats can be reserved at All Terrain Cycles.

Positioning in the bunch to prevent a crash

Another good article from Cycling Tips on riding in a bunch. And some hints on avoiding 'dropping' your bike, especially as the weather's likely to turn a bit cooler and wetter over the coming months.

Big Weekend

As president of the club I'd like to thank everybody who got involved in the running of both the Crit and the Road Race this weekend just gone. Even though I wasn't directly involved, it all seemed to go really well and feedback has been great.

As an indication, Laurie Noonan the Chief Commissaire, wrote his report to Cycling Victoria and included the following conclusion:

"These were very well-run events considering the size of the club involved. A weekend of cycling including the ‘Participation’ rides gave the town a great atmosphere and I believe it has the potential to grow into a major event on the Victorian Road calendar. This club and this event should be fully supported by Cycling Victoria in all aspects."

Congratulations to all of you!

Well done too to Deb Hunter, Josh Hopwood and Steffan Vaivars for great results in the Road Race.

Next, as organiser of the SHCCC, I'd also like to thank all of you that supported my rides over the weekend … but especially those of you that gave your time to help run the event. A big, big thank you to you!

Recreational Ride this Sunday

If you you recover from the night before, the next recreational ride is being held on Sunday morning, starting at 10am. Lunch is at the Lakeside Hotel, Jamieson (yes, the brewery.)

There are four distance options:
25km - Lakeside Hotel to Kevington and back.
33km - Howqua Inlet to Kevington, then to Lakeside Hotel.
55km - Mansfield to Jamieson, then Eildon Road climb and back to hotel.
90km - Mansfield to Jamieson, then Eildon Road climb and back to hotel; then back to Mansfield after lunch!

If you'd like to join in for lunch at the Lakeside and the ride to get there, please email Jenni Sparnon jenni.sparnon@gmail.com by 8pm Thursday, so we have an idea of numbers. (Don't tell me at tomorrow night's road race, I'll just forget. You need to email Jenni.)

Change of name

In case you weren't aware, CycleSport Victoria has changed its name to Cycling Victoria.
This now brings Victoria in to line with most other states and the national body, Cycling Australia.
However, I'm sure there'll now be even more confusion between Cycling Victoria and Bicycle Victoria.

That's all for now … see you out there.

Cheers,
Bruce Halket.

More on doing turns … Rolling Turns, Pacelining, Echeloning

(Many thinks to Wade Wallace of Cycling Tips - www.cyclingtipsblog.com)

There are a few different types of pacelines in cycling. Each of them are required at different times and situations.

1. The Echelon.  To be used in crosswinds. It’s an effective way to negotiate crosswinds and cut through them like a knife. See this previous post for more about echelons. Just one thing to remember – pull off into the wind.

Etiquette: Don’t be the guy who pulls through too hard. This will force the rider who just did his turn at the front to step on the gas just to catch you while you’re pulling through. Instead, roll through smoothly, pull off in front of the lead rider and ease up to let the next rider come through. Did I already mention pull off into the wind?

2. Rolling Turns. This is when you smoothly rotate through riders taking turns at the front. The rider on the front will not be there for more than a few seconds before the next rider smoothly rolls through and pulls off in front of the guy he just passed. Once the rider rolling through pulls in front of the lead rider, he is now the lead rider and should back off the pace slightly so that the next rider pulling through can come around. This style of pacelining is done when group efficiency needs to be at its highest. These types of turns work best in small groups or in break away situations. If the group is too large, you’ll find that the whole group won’t participate in rolling their turns and only 5-10 riders will be doing the work at the front. This is why breakaways usually fall apart if they are too big. Everyone will stop working if there are too many riders sitting on. If it’s just a training ride, most riders don’t mind doing all the work at the front and having others get a free ride at the back.

Etiquette: As above, Don’t be the guy who pulls through too hard.  Unfortunately, there is always someone who does this, so the worst place to position yourself is in front of the strongest rider or that rider pulling through too hard (i.e. in front when pulling through, behind when drifting backwards). Also, if you’re going to sit in and not work with the group, stay at the back. Don’t roll through half way and then decide you don’t want to be at the front when your time comes. This will mess up the rhythm of the group. Instead, stay at the back and when it’s your turn to come into the faster moving line, give a verbal indication (like “Yup!”, or “Go”) to the guy in front of you so that he knows that he needs to prepare to get on.

3. The Paceline. This is when the rider at the front will take a big hard pull (between 30 seconds to a 1 minute) to ramp up the pace.  That rider will then pull off and drift back in the group while the next rider will do the same. This is usually done in high pressure situations in races where speed is a priority, not efficiency.

These include:

  • bringing back a breakaway
  • a small group trying to quickly bridge a gap
  • a leadout train at the end of a race coming into a sprint finish
  • a Team Time Trial

Etiquette: You can pull through hard on these types of turns. This is the point. The rider who just finished will be spent and will drift back quite a few places to recover. If you’re that rider who just pulled off, the trick is not to drift back too slowly or you’ll have to accelerate too hard to get back onto the group and you could easily get dropped. Drift back at a slightly slower pace, but keep your speed up so you can get back on and concentrate on recovery once you’re safely in the group.

4. Track Turns. This is almost the same as a paceline but the rider on the front pulls off after about 100m. This is a less intense and smoother way of taking turns in a group. Team Time Trials will often use this method of group work.

5. Sociable Turns. I don’t know what these are called, but they’re a great way to get a chat in during a recovery or social ride.  Nice and easy.

Etiquette: Do not make this into a hammer session. No half-wheeling.

And what about rolling turns on the climbs?
“Rolling Turns” and “climbing” should not be used in the same sentence. The whole point of rolling turns is to cut down on wind resistance. Once the road goes up, wind resistance becomes minimal and you’re fighting against gravity. Everyone will have their own pace on the hills. Let the paceline, echelon, or group turns resume after the climb is done.

A couple of final points from me:

  • Pacelining or Track Turns work best with small groups (like the ones most of us ride in on a Thursday night.)
  • Try to be more aware of wind conditions before the race even starts. If you need to form an echelon, you'll do it more quickly and evenly.
  • If your group is caught by a faster group, take a few seconds on the back to watch the faster group doing their turns. Once you've worked out which way they're rolling, which type of turn they're doing, then try to help out. Try not to jump in straight away, you might muck up their rhythm.
  • Sociable Turns are also known as 'Suicide Turns' - they are NOT recommended on narrow, country roads like those around Mansfield!

BikeBuller MTB Fest results

Mitch had good results this weekend in the BikeBuller MTB Fest. On Saturday in the 25km event he finished 19th overall out of 250 riders.   He came 3rd in the Under 18 category.

In the same race Tom MacMunn is listed as 24th, Dan MacMunn 60th - but something went wrong with the timing! They were both higher up.

On Saturday afternoon, Dan can in 2nd, Tom in 28th!

On Sunday Mitch completed the 50km event. He had a puncture, had mechanical problems and rode the last 30km with no back gears. He came first in his category and received a medal! Well done Mitch!

Dan completed all stages and finished 11th overall! Congratulations Dan.

Tom got crook on Sunday and couldn't race - poor old bloke.

Graded Scratch this Thursday

A bit of a change coming up for this Thursday night. Instead of just the usual A, B, C and D grades, we're also going to experiment with a Women's Grade!

So, A, B, C and D grades will be for blokes only … the girls will get their own grade.

The race will be shortened slightly. Start is still at the Botanic Park, finish is still on Graves Road; but we'll now turn around on the Whitfield Road at Long Lane (we won't go all the way out to Bridge Creek.)

Entries still need to be in by SMS to John on 0428 503 437 by 8pm on Wednesday night.

More on Thursday ...

This Thursday the Deck are hosting us for dinner and also the opening night of the Beyond the Studio Door life drawing exhibition. All MMBCC members are invited to have a look at the exhibition before, during or after dinner.

Nine artists will present work in life drawing over a range of mediums. It should be really interesting. Artists include: Pam Moore, Kym Stubbs, Debra Paterson, Kristina Alstegren, Anton Costantino, Karen Pirie, Jenny Gibney, Billie Pridham and Wendy Jagger.

There is also a rumour going around that some of the artists will be there and looking for life drawing models for the next series!

Who wants to play Doctors and Nurses?

Keep an eye out around town for the new flyer (click here) for the M2M dinner dance. Word has it that Rossy volunteered to model for it but this was vetoed by all the Courier staff! Even the life drawing exhibitors turned him down!

Hints 'n' Tips - Race craft and etiquette

Probably time for another reminder on race and bunch riding. It is your responsibility to learn and understand about race craft and etiquette. You have an obligation to ride in a responsible and predictable manner. There are no exceptions ... not for anybody!

And don't forget … accidents cost! There's the potential loss of income to the injured, not to mention the cost to replace and/or repair expensive equipment.

So here are a few hints and tips we should all know and race by.

Groups that start together on a Thursday need to ride more like a team.

  • Think of a Handicap race as a Team Time Trial (we've had a few of these this season) until 200m before the finish.
  • Be responsible for each other's safety.
  • Be aware of the wind and the direction it's coming from. Which direction should you be doing turns?
  • Look out for each other … it can be almost as enjoyable to get a 'team-mate' up for a win.

Be predictable.

  • HOLD YOUR LINE, no sudden changes of direction.
  • Keep your momentum CONSISTENT. Hint: notice how someone in front who stands up tends to 'go backwards' for a moment. Practice the 'skill' of standing up to accelerate without losing momentum.
  • CHOOSE THE RIGHT GEAR. Hint: if you're in too large a gear when you stand, your bike will more easily 'sway' and move sideways … REALLY dangerous in a bunch! Too low a gear and you'll lose momentum too quickly.
  • SIGNAL if there's a hazard on the road ahead. Those behind you can't easily see past you!

Be 'space-conscious'.

  • Follow the wheel ahead but DON'T 'OVERLAP' it!. if you overlap wheels and the rider in front suddenly moves across, he'll take your wheel! This is really important when it's windy.
  • Make each other aware of approaching groups. Hint: when you get to the back of your group, drop back a metre or two to give yourself the space to look behind you safely. Then keep your group informed.
  • When you catch a slower group, let them know you're approaching.
  • If a faster group is approaching (and remember, you'll be looking behind for them and they'll let you know they're coming!) make sure you allow them space to overtake safely!

All normal road rules apply to bunch riding and racing.

  • The only time you can drive a car on the wrong side of the road is to overtake if it's safe. A bike is no different.
  • The only time you should be riding on the wrong side of the road in a race … ever … is when your group is overtaking a slower group. And even then, only when there's no other option.

If you feel your skills aren't up to scratch in any of these areas, you need to practice a more. Making our rides and races safer will make them more enjoyable for you and everyone else.

Saturday - Rail Trail Opening

The Shire is hosting an official opening of the Mansfield to Bonnie Doon section of the Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail this coming Saturday. Head for the western side of the Bonnie Doon Bridge for a sausage sizzle and refreshments from 11am. There'll be prizes for the most creatively decorated bike or person.
There's a ride to Bonnie Doon leaving from the Visitor Information Centre at 9am.

First Aid during races

One of the things we discussed at the Road Commissaires's meeting in late December was First Aid. Deb Cook, Laura Carter and Margaretanne Hood have met recently to discuss this and would like to put together a procedure so that you can be confident that if you do have a prang during a race, club members around you will be able to look after you until the ambulance arrives.

They've already suggested we upgrade our first aid kits. Then we should write a policy/protocol/procedure so we all know where the first aid kit will be, how to use it, who is qualified to use it and lots more.

So, to start with, there are a couple of questions I'd like to ask each of you:

  • Do you have a first aid qualification? Could you please email me the details? (I know we asked this a year or so ago but this time something will be done with it!)
  • If you're not qualified but would like to be, would you be interested in doing a course if the club organises one?

This is just the start. We will then have to determine how we use this info and ask if those people would be prepared to have their names listed.

The committee will soon also discuss a more detailed (and confidential) list of members. This might include such things as next of kin, relevant medical conditions, allergies, etc. But there are privacy issues involved, so we'll discuss this further before we go ahead. But happy to hear your thoughts in the meantime ...

SHCCC entries

A new order of club kit has been placed with Ventou. So if you want to get the cheap entry into the SHCCC and you don't yet have a full set of club kit, you need to go see Shannon at All Terrain Cycles. If you reserve your kit, or you already have a full set, you can enter the SHCCC for $75 (yes, you'll get the SHCCC jersey! You'll even go into the draw to win the wheels if you enter before the end of February.) But you need to email me to get the discount. Entries will only be open for another couple of weeks. Visit www.shccc.com.au for more info.

BMX track

A detailed plan of the proposed BMX track is due to be finished in the next few days. So we should be able to submit a planning application with the Shire not long after that. It's taken a while but it looks like we're getting somewhere!

Road bike for sale

Tracey Shipley has her Giant road bike for sale. As new, ridden only 20km, Women’s XS. RRP $1200; will sell for $650. Email Tracey Shipley info@highcountrymaze.com.au for more information.

Finally ...

Tim and Nicole Ross are in New Zealand but aren't in Christchurch. They were due to go but I don't think they will be anymore!

That's all for now … see you out there.

MMBCC News - 14 February 2011

Apologies that there hasn't been much in the way of newsletters lately; I've been away. In case you were wondering, "yes, the snow was great! Thanks for asking!"

The club website should be up very soon. I'm hoping this will be one of the last newsletters I email out to you. From very soon, all this type of news will be listed at www.mmbcc.org.au and you can have a look through whenever you like. Until then, here is the news …

Road bike for sale

Tracey Shipley has her Giant road bike for sale. As new, ridden only 20km, Women’s XS. RRP $1200; will sell for $650. Email Tracey Shipley info@highcountrymaze.com.au for more information.

Ventou Marysville Lake Mountain Challenge - Saturday 26 February

8am start from Marysville. Distances: 35km, 80km, 120km, 160km. (The 80km & 160km rides include the climb up Lake Mountain.) For more information and entries visit www.challengeseries.com.au. I have three free entries available from Ventou, the maker of the MMBCC kit. Keep reading to find out how you can get one.

Dirt Crits track at Riflebutts Reserve

With many thanks to all the volunteers who turned up on Sunday (and especially Shannon and the Bocks, who seem to have done a lot of the work) the new Dirt Crits track is ready for its debut on Monday night.
Kids race starts at 5.30pm; Adults at 6.00pm. Even roadies are encouraged to grab the old mountain bike out of the shed (you know, the one with all the cobwebs on it!) and ride up for a look.  In fact, the first three 'roadies' to ask me about the Lake Mountain Challenge while at Dirt Crits on Monday night will get the free entries.

MMBCC entry offer for SHCCC

The cheap entry offer to the SHCCC ($75!) is still open to MMBCC members. But remember, you need to have a full set of club kit to wear during one of the rides. If you need to get some club kit, see Shannon at All Terrain Cycles. If he doesn't have your size in stock, we'll arrange an order. You'd better do it straight away - the SHCCC is only 5 weeks away and Ventou will need all that time to make up your order. And you need to email me about the discounted entry offer.

Wang Autumn Series

The Wangaratta Cycling Club has released its Autumn Series calendar but it doesn't appear to be on their website yet (They've emailed it to me but the formatting has gone awry and it's not easy to read). The MMBCC is listed as an invited club so you can ride in a Wang race without having to have an 'Open' licence. For those interested, the Two Day Tour is listed for May 21 and 22.

Cycling Promotion Media Release - Bikes outsell cars by 2,000,000!

2010 has continued a decade of dominance with bicycles outselling cars each year for the past decade by over 2,000,000. Over 11.5million bikes were sold in that time. Selling over 1.3million bikes in 2010, the Australian bicycle industry is now showing clear signs of returning to its record levels of 2007. These figures represent a 12% increase from the previous year and a 67% increase from 2001.

The sales of bicycles are supported by figures released by the Australian Government indicating a 32% increase in people choosing to ride a bike in the same period, Australians are choosing the bicycle for transport, recreation, fitness, general health and sport in increasing numbers.

The choice to ride a bicycle is increasingly broadly based across the entire population; it’s not just the domain of the fit, the fast or the sporty. With the community’s support for and participation in cycling and the benefits extending to the economic, health, environmental and social arenas, there are strong arguments for the government to do more to support it.

The recent release of the National Cycling Strategy 2011 - 2016 by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport shows the time is right for the federal government to commit more funding to achieve its objectives. Signed by all federal, state and territory transport ministers the National Cycling Strategy aims to double the rate of cycling by 2016.

Federal leadership and increased investment in infrastructure, educational and promotional programs will be needed however if this goal is to be achieved. The Cycling Promotion Fund applauds the recent federal commitment to the national AustCycle program which will encourage more Australians to acquire the skills they need to cycle safely, but there’s more that needs to be done.

The Australian Government is facing critical decisions on key transport issues. In 2005 the cost in lost productivity through transport congestion was $9billion per year, forecast to grow to $20billion per year by 2020.

We are facing an obesity crisis, the average Australian would get their daily requirements of physical activity if they walked, rode a bicycle or caught public transport to work. The use of bicycles for transport, recreation and fitness continues to have increasing benefits to the Australian economy and these will continue to increase as bicycle sales continue to grow. The Cycling Promotion Fund calls on the Federal government to invest in support of the increasing numbers of Australians who are voting with their feet and choosing to ride a bicycle.

Rail Trail update

Happy New Year
2011 will be a very busy year for the rail trail team and the contractors that are building the trail. December 2011 is the completion date so with less than twelve months to go it will be full steam ahead. Weather conditions have caused delays but we hope to get some dry conditions in the coming months so we can gain access to areas that have been under flood.

Fencing
Murrindindi councillors gave the all clear for the trail to proceed through their shire at its December meeting. A committee will be formed in Murrindindi Shire to oversee the fencing project which will be funded from sales of surplus concrete and steel bridge beams to the project and interest gifted to Murrindindi from Mansfield Shire.

Construction Update
Contracts have been let or will be let this month for gravel supply, pavement laying, bridge deck removal, concrete decks, toilet facilities, vegetation removal, revegetation, bridge replacement and supply of hand rails. Designs are still being finalised for some road crossings and timber bridge replacement/rebuilds. Vegetation removal is taking place across the three shires currently and revegetation will begin in the autumn.

The above average rainfall has caused noxious weeds to flourish along the GRHCRT. To combat this contractors have sprayed for St. Johns Wort, broom, briar rose, hawthorn, gorse Patersons Curse and blackberries in the Mansfield Shire at Mansfield Shire's expense. Many areas along the trail have been well maintained by farmers and neighbours since the last train ran in 1978, but other sections have had no stock or maintenance done for some time.

Holiday Makers
From all reports the trail in Mansfield had lots of use over the holiday period. One local cyclist described crossing the Bonnie Doon bridge “like we had cycled to Queensland – blue water, people on skis and swimming, boats and jet skis. Holiday houses were full and there was a great buzz.” (This obviously was before the Queensland floods). Many walkers are also taking advantage of the smooth surface of the trail, rather than bush tracks, and the beautiful scenery. Lots of comments and complements on how good the “sort of bitumen” is to ride on (actually describing the black chert).

That's all for now … see you out there. Perhaps on Monday night at Riflebutts Reserve?

Cheers,
