MMBCC News - 6 March 2012

Hi Everyone,

There's lots of cycling associated information coming through as well as the wrap from our weekly Mountain and Road events.
The executive have a meeting coming up next week and if you have any thoughts on the club, please shoot me an email or give me a call.
The Road committee will be drawing up the Autumn calendar soon so if anyone has any specific racing/social ideas, let us know as well.
The next couple of weeks should be busy and fun with Mountain bike action on Buller over the long weekend followed by The Scody High Country Cycle Challenge and the Criterium/Road race the following weekend.

Mitch has done it again.

In Newcastle last week Mitch won the XC time trial and was winning the XCO but half way through the race he lost his brakes and ended up FIFTH - his first lap was as fast as the U23 riders. He will head to New Zealand in April with the first ever MTB U17 Australian Team to do two road tours and additional training.

Road Racing.

Have a look at the results page for last weeks results. Whitfield Road this week with a handicap on the shortened course. Steve Silver, Stewart Goodings and Rob Greenway are on duty with Tom Thoburne and MargaretAnne Hood the big bosses. Ring Di by 8.00pm Wednesday please.

There is a ride up Buller next Wednesday for the Jodi Lee Foundation - have a look at the end of this newsletter for more details .

Mountain Biking.

Have a look at the Mountain Bike results page for the latest news from last nights racing.

Other stuff.

MMBCC CRIT AND UP BULLER.
John Lithgow is well on the way to rounding up his volunteers for the MMBCC Criterium and Buller Race in a couple of weeks. Have a look at the poster on the web site - CLICK HERE - and call John on 0407 301 232.

FILM NIGHT.

Max Fricke is having a fundraising night NEXT MONDAY 12 MARCH 7.00pm - Safe House - tickets at the door

RAIL TRAIL (from Bruce H).
Here's an opportunity to improve our almost complete Rail Trail.
If you're on Facebook, vote for the Mansfield project in the Environment section. It's a clunky page to vote on but if you're used to Facebook it won't be too much of a problem. (I'm fairly new to Facebook, so I've still got a headache!)
Kerstie Lee is from the local Landcare group and she's applied for funding for revegetation along the Rail Trail.
Please have a read, use the link at the bottom and vote. (Or as they say in Canberra "Vote early - vote often!")
Cheers,
Bruce.

Good morning!
I am the Landcare Facilitator from the Mansfield district (Up2Us Landcare Alliance). I applied for the Bank of Melbourne grant a few weeks ago and on Friday last week I heard that I was one in 10 who were shortlisted in the environment category in Victoria which was very exciting. However, this is the first step and now I need to generate community support so that people can vote for this project on facebook - the project with the greatest support is the one who will ultimately receive the prize.  (I never thought I would have to be a politician as a Landcare facilitator - all things to all people is our motto I guess).  Here is a little blurb about the project.

Linking the community through growing and planting

The Up2Us Landcare Network has been shortlisted for a Bank of Melbourne Grant of $10,000, which will be voted on Facebook by popular choice.

“Linking our community through growing and planting” is hoped to be a collaborative project by linking in the Mansfield Shire Council, local schools, other members of our community and corporate partners.  It would have been more apt if I had called it "Propagating a community", with the money going towards the purchase of trees and equipment.

The focus of the project will be working alongside the Agribusiness students at Mansfield Secondary College and the Mansfield Shire Council to maintain and improve the amenity of the Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail.  Included in this is an opportunity for local students to learn skills in propagating seeds growing plants, and planning for planting.

It is aimed that this will provide an easily accessible space for all schools to be involved in National Tree Day later on in the year.

With the correct vegetation, this site could provide a biolink running from Mansfield to Seymour and give the necessary habitat to save the endangered legless lizard.

Please support us in this venture and vote 1 for “Linking our community through growing and planting” on the bank of Melbourne websitewww.bankofmelbourne.com.au/thelocalproject

Thankyou so much for your support in this and pass it to as many people as you possibly can.

If you need any further information on this please feel free to contact me on the details below.

Cheers
Kerstie

JODI LEE FOUNDATION RIDE THROUGH MANSFIELD

I am from the Jodi Lee Foundation and we have a team of riders coming
through your area on Tuesday and Wednesday 13 and 14 March. It would be
fantastic if we could get as many people and riders as possible to show
support to these guys. Listed below is some further information on the ride
if you are able to post on your website or send around an email.
Please feel free to contact me on 0401133643 should you require further
information.

Kind regards

Nicole Anderson
Jodi Lee Foundation
**
*10 March - 16 March - Ride for the Little Black Dress*
*From Canberra to Melbourne *

The Jodi Lee Foundation was founded in 2010 in honour of Jodi Lee, to save
lives through increasing awareness and encouraging early detection of bowel
cancer.

In January 2011, 14 cyclists pedalled form Melbourne to Adelaide to promote
the Jodi Lee Foundation. The team raised in excess of $135,000. The impact
of the ride was not simply the funds raised, but the influence the message
of early screening had on people.

Following the success in 2011, the event is back for 2012. This year a team
of 22 cyclists and 4 support crew are planning to ride from Canberra to
Melbourne. The team will cover over 1,000 kms of challenging terrain across
New South Wales & Victoria. We have made this year's ride a little more
interesting by tackling not only The Snowies, but we will also take the
team up onto Mt Buller. We aim to raise $200,000.

Come and join the guys as they tackle Mt Buller on Wednesday 14 March.
See rideforthelittleblackdress.com
<http://www.rideforthelittleblackdress.com/>for daily updates on the ride.

That's all for now,

John.

Hello Everyone,

We had a bit of fun during the road race last week with Dave Clark having a bit of a fall.

Blood guts and everything (not really but it sound good) and a free ambo ride to Wang.

It's amazing what some will do racing for ninth place but gear failure is a hazard for all of us.

Thanks to all those who stopped and helped get him off the road.

Congrats to Craig Wilson for the win AGAIN (attention handicapper please) and we look forward to a Mt Buller road ride this week. Duty is Josh Hopwood, Lisa Fricke, and Euan Friday with Commissionaires Leonie McLaughlin and Bruce Halket. Entries to Di by 8.00pm Wednesday please.

MMBCC News - 7 February 2012

Hi Everyone,

CONGRATULATIONS to Laura and Andy on the birth of HANNAH - another new member to the bike club.

Don't forget the social ride this weekend - have a look at the web site for details.

Dirt Crits Race 06/02/12
First week back for the kids at Dirt Crit. There was a big turnout with lots of excitement and the holiday spirit still in the air (along with the dust!). Great ride by all and well done to Bella MacMunn in taking first place!

Adults race was a graded scratch of the short loop course:
D grade winner (3 laps) - Kerryn MacNamara 21:13 and hot on her tail was Tina McDonnell 21:14. Great effort by Flynn Bowker (21:37) in 3rd place.

C and B grade were combined this week (6 laps) - winning spot went to Rob Greenway 32:08, 2nd was Paul MacNamara 32:22 and Jason Parker (32:31) in 3rd place.

There was some stiff competition in A grade (7 laps) with riders leaving the crowd in a cloud of dust each lap. Mitch Greenway took 1st place convincingly with 31:28, 2nd was Chad 32:41 and 3rd place went to Foley Lachal 33:26.

Well done and thanks to everyone for another great Monday night at Dirt Crits. We hope to see even more people next week - come on down for a ride and a chat - the perfect way to start the week!

Shannon and Mitch on Duty for next week 13 Feb - look out A Grade!! Graded scratch race with the course TBC.

Tolmie Sports Day

Tolmie Sports is this coming Saturday the 11th, a fun day out for the whole family. Wood chopping & horse riding competitions, markets and food stalls, arts & crafts, and games for the kids.

The club is running the Annual Tolmie Sports Dirt Crit around lunch time (12:30pm). All club riders are welcome it will be a handicap race on a short course.

We also need some more names for the 3 man challenge, the last event for the day (3:30pm) and quite the spectical!

8 riders are required to team up with a runner (who will run a short distance with a bag of chaff), and then will be teamed up with a wood chopper on the day.

Please contact Shannon (0409 552 564) or Katie (0415 369 297) by Friday if you would like to race the crit and/or the 3 man challenge.

Teams for the 3 man challenge currently consist of: Garryn (Rider) & Claire Hoffman (Runner), Dave & Katie Moore, Tina & Yully , Chad & Cam and more... Get your names in quick for a really fun race with a fair bit of laughter!

To top off a fab day, Tina has kindly offered to host a BBQ at her Barwite chalet after the Tolmie Sports day. Bring along some snags and kick back!

That's all for this week.

MMBCC News - 31 January 2012

Hi Everyone,

A quieter week this week after the action at the Tour Down Under etc.

Check out the website for details of the Whitfield social ride on Sunday 12th February and Jane Diplocks fundraising movie night next Tuesday 7 February. Both should be fun.

Roadies have a graded scratch this Thursday on the Buller Road course with Craig Wilson, Deb Cook, and Julie Dolling having their turn at duty (c:Allan Gerrans/Di Condie), and the kids are back at the Riflebutts MTB Park next Monday.

Posted a very leisurely time up Eildon Hill, 1:03:54 and an equally leisurely 1:15:00 Stonefly hut to hut. Both great riding, particularly stonefly with stacks of wildflowers happening at the moment. Also rode part of the Granny's flat to Mitchells bridle trail out of Jamieson. Anyone looking for a great, fast trail should give this a go.

Cheers , John.

MMBCC News - 24 January 2012

Well, don't you love having the AUSTRALIAN ROAD CHAMPION and the winner of the TOUR DOWN UNDER as a member of our club. Well done Simon and don't forget that the offer of free entry into any of the Thursday night races is still open.

Talking of Thursday nights, last weeks results are now on the web site for those who missed out on a thrilling race. This week it's back to handicap racing with the start at Botanic Park (entries to Di by 8.00pm Wednesday please) and because it is Australia Day we are having a BBQ afterwards at the Botanical Park – all welcome and BYO everything.

The SOCIAL committee has been hard at work and have announced their next ride - WHITFIELD SOCIAL RIDE - SUNDAY 12TH FEBRUARY. Various options so have a look at the web site for details (CLICK HERE).

Congratulations also must go to our Mountain bikers who competed at Mt Buller on the weekend - Mitch Greenway, Foley Lachel and Stefan Vaviers in the XC racing and Issac Heppell in the Down Hill.  Next week is a handicap race for the adults and Chad and Frank doing duty.

MMBCC News - 17 January 2012

Hi Everyone,

The road racing got off to a good start last week with three strong bunches for the graded scratch albeit in some pretty windy conditions and the Mountain Bikers started their post Christmas racing last night at the Riflebutts MTB Park.

We are still looking for volunteers for this weekends Mt Buller National Mountain Bike round. You would be required to Marshall at certain check points throughout the weekend and we need 15 each day. The Club will get significant money if we fill all the places. Please contact Ben Annear on ben.annear@mtbuller.com.au

We have also started a new Challenge Ride – Stonefly Hut to Hut. Have a look on the site under Ride&Races and be the first to email Mark with your time. There have also been a couple of updates since last time so have a look and 'avago.

I am sure you are as disappointed as I am about SBS losing the Tour Down Under coverage and Channel 9 showing highlights at 11.00pm or after BUT, if you go the this page (wwos.ninemsn.com.au/cycling/) they will show highlights at 7.00pm each night. It will be live on Channel 9 next Saturday and Sunday though for everyone to SEE SIMON WIN.

Talking of Simon, we have put his photo up permanently on the front page of the site.

ROAD RACING

We did have an issue though with C grade which I'd like to mention here as well as prior to racing this week. One cyclist was dropped well within the outgoing neutral zone resulting in a pretty lonely remainder of the race. As a result the commissaires decided to award Sue with first place and the rest of C grade a standard attendance point. It was probably inadvertent, however as we say at the start, "it's not for sheep stations". We have developed these local rules over the years to improve safety and also to make the racing fair and fun, so please be mindful when out there on the road and well done Sue for some tenacious riding.

Don't forget to check ahead with the roster so the person in charge of duty the following week is in a position to take all the boxes and signs home. Thia week - Dave Clark, Andy Setchell, Mark Calvert-Jones.

Anyone who hasn't got their 2012 licence – you will not be racing. See /join-now for details on how to renew.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The MTN crew started back last night and have a good read of the rest of the website - there's lots happening.

Hopefully you will be able to help Ben this Friday Saturday and Sunday at Mt Buller for the races.

Membership

Road membership renewals

There are two ways to join or renew:

1. Do it online;

2. Fill out a form and see Geoff Jones (with a cheque made out to MMBCC or the correct money!)  - his mobile number is 0409 176 944.

And there are three main types of membership: Open, 'Club' and Recreational. For more information on memberships, licenses, insurance and to download a printable membership form, go to:

    http://www.cycling.org.au/default.asp?Page=39143&MenuID=Membership/c20013/39143

All new memberships and renewals have a club fee added on: $20 for adults, $10 for juniors. If you renew online, this will be automatically added.

Open

-    To renew your Open license (so you can also race at other CA clubs' events) you can do this online. This is the easiest way for the club as we have no admin to do, we just get an email from CA confirming renewals. This is the best way! This is the link you need:

 https://members.cycling.org.au/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Member_Services1&template=security/login.cfm&CFID=78242&CFTOKEN=71862429

-    If you renew but your card doesn't arrive by our first 2012 race in January, you can still race if you print out and bring along the confirmation email you receive when you renew.

Remember ... from January 1 onwards, you're not covered by the club's insurance if you don't renew. No 2012 card ... no race start!

Club

 - Club Only memberships have changed … they're now a full license but with a Regional Discount! (But you're still not allowed to use it at another club … this is for use at MMBCC road events only!) If you want one of these you need to fill out a form (you can't do this online!) To download the form, go to:

http://www.cycling.org.au/site/cycling/national/downloads/2010/Membership/2011%20Application%20Form.pdf

The prices for Regional Discount memberships are as follows:

 - U19: $121 + $10 club fee = $131.

 - Elite and U23 (19 to 29 years old): $198 + $20 club fee = $218.

 - Masters (30 years old and above): $121 + $20 club fee = $141.

 - Once you've filled out the form, contact Geoff Jones - cimx2@bigpond.com  or 0409 176 944 - cash or cheques made out to Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling Club Inc please.

Again ... from January 1 onwards, you're not covered by the club's insurance if you don't renew. No 2012 card ... no race start!

Recreational

 - This has now had a name change; it's now called Cycling For All. If you want a Cycling For All membership, you can do this online at any time. It's a rolling 12-month membership. So whatever date you join online, your renewal will be due on the same date 12 months later.

https://members.cycling.org.au/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Member_Services1&template=security/login.cfm&CFID=78242&CFTOKEN=71862429

MTBA membership renewals

Firstly, you should get an email from MTBA when your membership renewal is due. Same as the road memberships, there will be a $20 club fee added to adult memberships, $10 for juniors (13-18yo). DirtMasters memberships (kids 3-12 yo) of $30 will NOT have a club fee added!

 - You can download a Rider Membership form here:

  http://www.mtba.asn.au/resources/riders

 - or you can pick up a membership form at Dirt Crits on a Monday night - just see whoever is on duty… or Uschi Steedman or Katie Mooree.

 - If you're thinking of joining as an MTBA for the first time, you'll find lots of info on memberships here:

http://www.mtba.asn.au/join

 - But the easiest way is to join (or renew) online:

https://www.registernow.com.au/mtba/

BMX memberships

Call Paul Fletcher on 0409 356 396. He has all the info you need.

You can get heaps of information and download a form from the BMXA website here:

http://www.bmxaustralia.com.au/default.asp?MenuID=Memberships/20466/0

MMBCC News - 6 December 2011

Hello Everyone,

Memberships

 Road membership renewals

There are two ways to join or renew:
1. Do it online;
Club
-    Club Only memberships have changed … they're now a full licence but with a Regional Discount!
    - Elite and U23 (19 to 34 years old): $198 + $20 club fee = $218.
    - Masters (35 years old and above): $121 + $20 club fee = $141.

-    You can download a Rider Membership form here:
    http://www.mtba.asn.au/resources/riders
or you can pick up a membership form at Dirt Crits on a Monday night - just see whoever is on duty… or Uschi Steedman or Katie Mooree.
-    If you're thinking of joining as an MTBA for the first time, you'll find lots of info on memberships here:
    http://www.mtba.asn.au/join
-    But the easiest way is to join (or renew) online:
    https://www.registernow.com.au/mtba/

BMX memberships
Call Paul Fletcher on 0409 356 396. He has all the info you need.
You can get heaps of information and download a form from the BMXA website here:
http://www.bmxaustralia.com.au/default.asp?MenuID=Memberships/20466/0

Value-Add memberships
For If you want to combine two of these memberships together, you can get a discount on the second membership, called a Value-Add. For instance, if you already have your MMBCC membership for road racing and you'd like to try Dirt Crits, you can get a discount on the MTBA membership you need.

MMBCC News - 29 November 2011

Hi Everyone,

Another good race last Thursday - well done Will and thanks to the volunteer marshals. Bruce has done a great job of upgrading the marshal's checklist so now it clearly shows all the steps and requirements for each duty person. Thanks also to to Bruce for donating an entry to the High Country Challenge for the Black and Tan winner. Sadly, due to a massive downpour, we all had to drink coffee instead and we'll have a think about rescheduling that event.

Up at Riflebutts Reserve there have been strong turnouts for C and D grade with the young crew of Lachie Opie, Flynn Bowker and Nick Howland making a considerable impression in last weeks races.

It was also a great night at the Produce Store last week for the premiere of the ABC Open's 110% pilot film project starring George, Shannon and Mitch. Well done to Uschi and all involved - it looked like a lot of fun.

MMBCC News - 22 November 2011

Hi Everyone,

Great to see some big turnouts at both the Mountain and Road events again this week attracting friends and others from outside the area to take part in the racing.

It was a good night as well last Thursday with the Paceline crew at the Produce Store - great venue and some amusing stories.

Don't forget the Film night this Wednesday, 6.30 at the Produce Store for the official launch of three short films about George, Shannon and Mitch. See details below.

Mountain Biking

Have a look at the results page for all this weeks action.

Next week is a handicap race with Anne-Maree is on Kids duty and Foley and Isaac on Adults duty.
Handicaps are the first column of the results sheet. CLICK HERE.

To Clarify - this week's road race starts at the Botanical Park and finishes on Graves Road.

Black & Tan
Saturday 26 November at 2.00pm at BP Roadhouse. PLEASE NOTE the new time. Entries to Di by 7.00pm Friday. Bruce is giving away a free entry into the SHCCC for the winner.

SHCCC discount for MMBCC members
Speaking of the SHCCC, Bruce is again offering a discounted entry for MMBCC members. All you have to do is email him - bruce@bikevents.com.au - and he'll email you back a special 'promotion' code.
Then go to www.shccc.com.au and enter online. If you put the code in when you enter, you'll get 40% off the entry price.
This is only for MMBCC members and only if you ride one of the days in full MMBCC kit: knicks, top and socks.
If you need to buy some kit, contact Fiona Greenway - fgreenwa@bigpond.net.au
Bruce tells me there are still SHCCC jerseys and knicks available. All the bib knicks are gone but if you really want them instead of knIcks, he'll see what he can do closer to the event.

Bruce's Garmin data from Thursday night's A-grade
Bruce thought he was going ok until Josh went past him at a great rate of knots. You can see Bruce's top speed at the finish was 62.9km but Josh has let on that his was 64.4km! No wonder he won!

MMBCC News - 15 November 2011

Hi Everyone,

A great turnout to last Thursday's Benalla Rd Race with a busy finish. Well done to Stefan on a close win and to everyone for a safe race.

Well done also to Foley Lachal on his first road race and it was good to see a crew from St.Kilda joining in (Tim's report below).

The Mountain crew continues with strong racing on Monday (Tom's report below).

Three short films featuring MMBCC's very own George Chalk, Shannon Rademaker and Mitch Greenway will be premiering at the Mansfield Produce Store on Wednesday November 23. (See below for more details.)

Who's got the record time up Old Tolmie Road (and who bumped Bruce off for third fastest up Buller) - CLICK HERE to find out.

Road Racing

Maiden handicap win for Dorothy!
Round six of the Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling Club Summer Road Series saw a field of 38 entrants greet the starter on Benalla Road for the second Handicap race of the series. Thirty three regulars were joined by five newcomers.
The first of these was Foley Lachal, a regular at Dirt Crits on Monday night but turning to the road for the first time. Welcome aboard Foley!
The other four first timers to an MMBCC road race were Wes Cordingly, Mark Guirgus, Michael Brown and Sam Watson, four members of the St Kilda Cycling Club. Visiting Bright for a week of training in the mountains in preparation for next month’s Tour of Bright, they decided to come over to Mansfield, just for the race. Being young fast and A-grade racers from Melbourne, they were sent off last as the Scratch group.
This meant all our usual groups moved out one; the usual Scratch group became Block, the usual Block moved out to 2nd Block, etc. And with a bit of a breeze around, Scratch was definitely favoured to win.
However, the local lads were keen to impress; in particular, the usual Scratch group who weren’t used to being chased by others. Block rode very strongly; Mauro Brega, Tom MacMunn, Andrew Gerrans, Josh Hopwood and Bruce Halket made up the minute to the next group by halfway. Conversely, Scratch had hardly made up any time on them at all.
Then Rob Greenway, Laurie Harding, Steffan Vaivars and Tim Ross joined in and upped the tempo. Witnesses recall hearing Stefan murmuring “Toto, we’re not in Block anymore...” This larger group then rounded up the rest of the field before Carlisle Hill and a huge bunch of riders lined up for a bunch sprint.
Mauro and Bruce tried to keep the pace high towards the finish... and then it was on for young and old! Rob started the sprint, then a flash of black with red highlights came storming through the centre! It was Steffan, resplendent in his red cycling shoes, finally fulfilling his potential and sprinting to great a win ahead of the consistent Andrew. Then came Bruce, Josh and Tim.
After the finish, Steffan let the world know he was pretty pleased with his win. Unnamed sources claim he was seen tapping his red shoes together and chanting “There’s no place like first! There’s no place like first!”
Rob held on for sixth ahead of Mark Calvert-Jones, Tom, Laurie and Steve Silver rounded out the top ten.
Fastest time was ridden by Mark Guirgus from Scratch. In a great ride, he nearly caught the main field.
Many thanks to our volunteers and officials: Euan, Louise, Jenny, Allan, George, Helen and any others I’ve forgotten; and to the Hotel Delatite for their sponsorship.
Next road race will be Graded Scratch Races, held on the Buller Road on Thursday 17 November. Entries via SMS to 0438 513 355 by 8pm Wednesday please.
It will be followed by dinner at The Produce Store with The Paceliners - a group of cyclists riding from Canberra to Melbourne to raise money for Heart Arrhythmia research. All welcome!

Mountain Biking

Steffan Vaivars and Darren Bakker are on duty for next week AND people are most welcome to whipper snip the trails before next Monday.  We are racing the long course.  Most of it looks good but another pass with the whipper snipper wouldn't hurt.  Thanks to Mick and Rob and Mitch the Start/Finish and the carpark looks great. Rail Trail

It was very disappointing to be told that the lockable bollards at Cheviot Tunnel have been pulled out of the ground and the locks cut. The bollards were placed at either end of the tunnel to stop car traffic as a safety precaution for walkers and cyclists. A new carpark has been made at the tunnel for ease of access for cyclists and walkers. Vehicles are still able to travel over the tunnel on Cheviot Road.

Police are aware of the vandalism and are asking for anyone with information to contact Yea police.

Bridge 0, a totally new bridge is under construction at Tallarook. This bridge will connect the town of Tallarook to the trail near the swimming pool. Bridges 45, 46 and 48 in the Merton area will soon be replaced with culvert pipes rather than being refurbished. The timber bridges were beyond repair and culvert pipes are a great alternative.

Code of conduct signage is now being placed at major entry points to the trail. The signage gives some tips on enjoying your trip and do’s and don’ts. The signs also give you your location and contacts for emergencies and shire details.

Hi Everyone,

Road

A few of us have had a sensational few days away cycling 7 peaks in 7 days ( or part thereof). Check it out on Facebook (7 peaks 7 days). Thanks to Jen Sparnon and Roy Comerford for a heap of support and for Gerard McHugh and Rod Comerford for organising it.

As a result there were fewer than usual for the Thursday night event but there should be a few fitter entries for this week.

Dinner this week is at The Hotel Delatite, and Euan is the Duty organiser (Dave Clark has the boxes). CLICK HERE for the calendar.

Also don't forget Black & Tan is on in a couple of Saturdays so have a look at the web site for the new course. (or just CLICK HERE.)

...and there is a Melbourne crew doing a Jamo-Buller return this Saturday and Up Eildon Hill on Sunday. Details in the last newsletter - CLICK HERE.

Social

The social ride is on this coming Sunday (13 Nov) starting 10am at the Tatong pub with a 27km ,50km and 70km option. Register with Jenny jenni.sparnon@gmail.com

Mountainbiking

Quite a lot from Tom this week so read on -

Licences

Please bring your MTBA licence to each race for the rest of the summer series. We will be required to sight licences at each race soon so we had better get into the habit.

Whipper snipping

If, at any stage, you have some time to get out to the reserve and do some clearing it would be much appreciated. Snakes have been regularly seen on the trail in the last few weeks and some sections of trail are difficult to ride with the amount of grass hanging over the trail. All trails need continuous clearing with this warm, wet weather. Clear 1m each side of the ride line and make sure rocks, logs, stumps are well cleared so that riders can see them in the grass. The committee is working on getting volunteer sheets so that club members can sign them for insurance purposes.

Kids

We have had a few near misses with unsupervised kids during the adults’ races. Could parents please make sure that there is an adult who knows they are responsible for your kids? Can we tell kids not to cross the track and to stay below the start/finish area? Can adults stay on the downhill side of the start/finish so that kids aren’t tempted to cross the trail? This will get dangerous if parents are not responsible for making sure their kids are supervised.

Duty

Kids Race Duty: 5:00pm with the race box (pick up from ATC)

Adults Race Duty: 5:30pm

Each rider will need to do duty at least once during the Summer Series. You can’t race and do duty this year – there are too many people and too much to do. At the end of the series each person will need to have done duty to be eligible to win the Summer Series. The Duty Roster is posted on the website (CLICK HERE) and it is your responsibility to ensure that you are on that list.

The Duty outline is also posted (CLICK HERE) as well as in the yellow folder. Please read over the sheet before Monday night so that you know what needs to happen when you are on duty.

Race Loops

The MTB committee meeting has decided on 4 different race loops for the rest of the summer series. There is a map on the way so I won’t try to describe them.

First Aid

We are compiling a list of club members with First Aid qualifications. If you have a current first aid qualification could you please see Uschi and let her know what qualification you have and when your qualification expires.

Cheers, John.

Mountain Biking.

The first handicap race of the Summer Series was held on Monday night.  It saw 18 riders on a new lap that was designed to allow plenty of opportunities for passing.  Please pass any feedback on this new loop onto the MTB committee.  We have a handicap race scheduled about once a month for the Summer Series and it would be great to race a course that people enjoy. Results on the Mountain Biking page.

Rail Trail Update.

Construction is progressing at a rapid rate on the trail but it is still a construction zone and should not be used. Unfortunately horses have been ridden on sections of the unfinished surface causing damage and there is evidence that cyclists have also been using the trail. Granitic sand is still being laid and rolled, and chert is being laid around the Merton – Bonnie Doon area.
Several bridges are still to be completed and once they are, the civils contractor will be working around these bridges to connect the trail to them.

Other than the 22 kilometres from Bonnie Doon to Mansfield the trail is not open.

Paceline visits Mansfield

Paceline is a charity bike ride which raises awareness and funds for cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). The funds gathered through Paceline are directed to research which enhances our understanding of these debilitating disorders.

With more than 400,000 Australians having one kind of cardiac arrhythmia or another, and this number constantly growing, it is essential that every effort is made to promote understanding and develop treatments.

In 2011 Paceline are riding 1100km from Canberra to Melbourne via the High Country and their fundraising target is $120,000.

They'll be arriving in Mansfield on Thursday 17 November, the afternoon of our Graded Scratch Races on Buller Road. The club will then join the Paceline crew at The Produce Store for dinner. And club members are welcome to ride with Paceline as they leave Mansfield on Friday morning via Howqua and the Eildon-Jamieson Road. (Perfect recovery ride after racing the night before!)

For more information on Paceline visit: http://pacelineride2011.gofundraise.com.au/

(Please note that dinner venues have now changed for that night - Dinner on Thursday 10 November will now be at Hotel Delatite. Dinner on Thursday 17 November will be at The Produce Store.)

Also, James Black is hosting a crew of about 30 cyclists from Melbourne, visiting on the Weekend of the 12th/13th November. They are riding from Jamieson to Buller and back on the Saturday , starting 7 am, and doing a time trial from the Goulburn bridge up the Eildon Hill at about 8.30am on Sunday morning. They have extended an invitation to dinner at the Jamieson Hotel on Saturday night and welcome anyone who wants to join them on any of the days. Road Racing.

Well the summer season has kicked off with the first road race which went well with not too many people feeling underdone!  Entries to Di for this week’s race on 0438 513 355 by Wednesday at 8.00pm please.  Also a belated congratulations to Darren Bakker for taking out the winter series - good effort when it's not always as enjoyable getting out when it's cold. The Murray to Moyne committee have put out the following statement –

“The Recreational Riders subcommittee have decided not to organise a team for the 2012 Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay (31/3/12 to 1/4/12)
This decision was reached because of many factors including; the challenge to fill all places, fundraiser’s burnout, etc…
It can certainly be reconsidered if 16 keen and enthusiastic riders, who commit to raising some funds for the Mansfield Hospital, stand up to be counted!!!

Understandably the Hospital is disappointed as this event constitutes a significant annual community contribution. It enables them to purchase items that they would otherwise not be able to afford. Keeping this in mind we plan to continue to ride on trainers at the Cup weekend and Easter Saturday bush markets.

Any queries??? - See Jenny Lovick, Margaretanne Hood or Jen Sparnon.”
