Thursday 31 October - Stewart's Bus Lines ITT

Stewart's Bus Lines Individual Time Trial - 31st October

A big field of 28 cyclists fronted up for the annual, Stewart's Bus Lines individual time trial over 11km last Thursday, held at the start of the Chapel Hill Rd. In perfect spring conditions, competitors took to the road with thirty second gaps. Sue Hall rode strongly to record a time of 22mins 35 seconds with first time appearances for the season from John Lithgow, Mick Feeney, Jack Hutchins, Tristan Mioni and Rod Stewart.

Mitch Greenway rode strongly with a record time of 15mins 16 seconds for the course to take out the fastest time for the night followed by Bruce Halket (16.27), Tristan Mioni (16.39), Mauro Brega (17.19) and Cam Lachal (17.57). Christine Hopkins was the fastest female with a quick 18.59. It was Sue Hall's ride though that saw her edge out Geoff Jones by a second for the handicap honours ( 23.35 vs 23.36). In a close result Mitch Greenway came third (23.46), Zoe Coghill fourth (23.54) and Janine Appleton fifth (24.05).

Thanks to Rod Stewart and Stewart's bus lines for sponsoring the event again and likewise to the Deck and Alpine Butchery for their support. This weeks race is the 4-up sprint on Graves Rd - entries to John by 8pm Wednesday 0428503437.

Saturday 26 October - Black n tan

Porter, pot holes and punctures

As part of Tourism North East´s Cycle Salute festival, the Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling Club hosted its `dreaded´ Black `n´ Tan race as an Open event on Saturday 26 October.

The Black `n´ Tan is regularly held by the club but this was the first time riders from outside the club were invited to race. The idea of dirt roads must be a bit intimidating as only three visitors braved our roads; Roeland Suys, Lewis Rattray and Scott Gigante made the drive up from Melbourne to take part.

What´s with the name? Here´s how the race was promoted on the Cycle Salute website -

Black `n´ Tan: (noun) a blended beer drink comprising a mix of stout and lager.

Black `n´ Tan: (noun) a splendid Road Race comprising a mix of sealed (black) and unsealed (tan) roads. Often ends with the consumption of the liquid Black `n´ Tan (fermented recovery beverage!) by participants. A 30km road race with two sections of dirt road on an `eyeglass-shaped´ circuit on the outskirts of Mansfield.

The mix of bitumen and dirt presented an equipment selection problem for riders. Bike and tyres needed to be robust enough to cope with about 5km of dirt but be fast enough for the 25km of sealed road. Some interesting choices were made which had consequences for many among the 16 starters.

Julie Dolling began proceedings from the Mansfield Holiday Park, as the sole Limit rider. Rattray and Gigante made up the Scratch group 15 minutes later.

Rattray was the first to succumb as he punctured almost as soon as he got onto the dirt of Scullys Lane. That left Gigante on his own off Scratch and made his job extremely difficult.

Suys was flying! He dropped all his companions from Block in the first half of the race; but tactically waited for Foley Lachal and Josh Hopwood to help him into the wind along Barwite Road. It did the trick... he dropped Hopwood and Lachal near the Showgrounds and rounded up the remnants of the 6-minute group (Steve Plummer, Cameron Lachal and Darren Bakker) on the dirt of Mt Battery Road.

Then his equipment choice cost him - he punctured hear the top of the hill.

That seemingly left the two Lachals, Hopwood, Plummer and Bakker to fight it out; but gaining fast was a flying Gigante! He´d gone right through the field on his own and had the leaders in sight with only a kilometre of dirt left.

Then HE punctured!

Foley attacked and got a gap on Cam and Hopwood. It looked to be Foley´s race with just the dirt descent to Graves Road left.

However on that short, rough section Foley, Cam and Bakker all punctured too!

Instead of stopping, the Lachals kept riding. A rapidly finishing Hopwood was able to get past Cam at the ford but there just wasn´t time to catch Foley, who took the win on a flat front tyre!

Hopwood took second ahead of Cam with Plummer fourth. Bruce Halket, Dolling, Alain Guerin, David Jagger, Stefan Vaivars and Tony Copland rounded out the top ten.

The Alpine Butchery prize for Fastest Time also went to Foley Lachel for a corrected time of 51 minutes 14 seconds.

Many thanks to our officials and volunteers: Sharron, Leonie, Tilly, John, Tony and Geoff. We couldn´t race without you!

Many thanks also to Dean, Chris and the new team at the Hotel Delatite for sponsorship of this race. Once the liquor license is sorted out, we´ll celebrate the Black `n´ Tan with a few Black `n´ Tans!

The MMBCC´s Summer Series continues on Thursday 31 October with the Stewarts Bus Lines Individual Time Trial on Chapel Hill Road. (Barbecue afterwards at Chateau Wilson - BYO everything.) Entries via SMS to 0428 503 437 by 8pm Wednesday 30 October please.

Thursday 10th October - Graded Scratch

Race 1 - Thursday 10 October - Graded Scratch

After a few weeks of warm spring weather, winter returned for the first road race of the Mansfield MtBuller Cycling Club's summer series. Despite the cold, wet and windy conditions, twenty five cyclists turned up for a 25km graded scratch race on the Whitfield rd.

Clearly there had been some training for some over winter and not so much for others but in all grades there were several attacks and it wasn't long before the field was well and truly mixed despite the grades starting at different intervals.

Bruce Halket and Josh Hopwood broke from the A Grade bunch to sort of contest the finish with Bruce edging Josh out and Tom MacMunn coming third.

New member Anthony Plummer had a strong ride to take out B grade with Foley Lachal and Bob Beattie placing second and third. Luckily for him , Euan Friday snuck into C grade and had a good win over Christine Hopkins and Ian Conrick and In D grade Sue Hall returned for a good win over Geoff Jones and Zoe Coghill in her first race.

Thanks to the Alpine Butchery and The Deck for supporting the night. This week sees a return to the Benalla rd for the first handicap of the season. Entries to John on 0428503437 by 8pm Wednesday.

Well done to all those who took part in the winter series and to all who helped out, particularly Jock , Bruce and Jen. Congratulations to Josh - the handicapper will be watching !

Here's Bruce's race summary and final results - thanks Bruce.

John

Yesterday saw the final race of the MMBCC Winter Road Series.
Seven starters, with the win going to Steve Flew in exactly 50 minutes, corrected to 46.30 (seems turning up to the last race on his hybrid did wonders for his handicap!) He held off Josh Hopwood by 20 secs who rode the fastest time of 40.50.
The final race had double points on offer, which saw the SHCCC entry prize go to Josh ahead of Jock Brega and Steve Flew.
Congratulations to Steve on the race win and Josh on the series win.
Many thanks to all our volunteers and officials and to all the members who tried to keep up their fitness with a bit of a pedal over winter.

21 February - Bakker Plumbing Handicap results

In contrast to the hot weather seen over the past few weeks the Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling Clubs race last Thursday was held with lightning flickering in the distance and the threat of being caught in a downpour.

Generously sponsored by Bakker Plumbing, twenty two cyclists headed out on the Howes creek Rd course. A last minute scratching left Clare Bennetts off limit by herself in her first race. This left Julie Dolling , Di Condie and Dick Forrest chasing with the bunch of Guerin , Jagger , Riley , Conrick and Bock next in line.

Despite lack of any real road time the bunch of Feeney, Friday , Calvert-Jones , Copland , Wilson and Eisner charged off next chased by Plummer , Christine Hopkins , Beattie and Macdonald. Scratch was last to leave , comprised of Halket , Ross Hopkins and Bakker.

Bennetts rode solidly and noisily on her bike and did well to hold off the bunch until after the turnaround. Jagger's bunch was sorting itself out coming out of the turnaround as the bunch of Feeney etal closed in. It seemed inevitable that the groups would join however after a good tunaround the group was not seen again. Halket , Bakker and Hopkins worked well to join block and it seemed they too would reel in the slower groups however a series of efforts fragmented the group and similarly other groups cracked giving David Jagger the opportunity to push out for a good win.

Julie Dolling rode consistently to place second and Ian Conrick tactically completed the podium. Ross Hopkins edged out Bruce Halket in a good finish for fastest time.

Thanks to Darren and Trish Bakker for sponsoring the night as well as the Alpine Butchery and the Delatite Hotel. Thanks too to our usual officials and helpers and the residents of Howes Creek.

14 February - Stewart Buslines Straight Line Sprint Results

World-first race format for MMBCC.

The Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling Club’s usual races are Handicap, Graded Scratch and an occasional Individual Time Trial.

But they say a change is as good as a holiday!

In what we think is a first (Possibly not a World-first but we’d go as far to claim an Australian-first) the race on Thursday 14 February saw a new ‘4-up sprint’ race format to give members a bit of a holiday.

The Stewart Buslines 4-up Sprint was held on Graves Road on a course only 800 metres long! (Sounds like a bit of a doddle, really.)

Heats were raced with four riders per heat. Based on the number of entrants, each rider had to compete in four heats; and there wasn’t much time to rest between heats! The best four points scorers from each grade then lined up for the grade final.

This four-up format brought together a unique combination of the tactics of track sprinting, the four-rider format of skier/boardercross and the point scoring of BMX.

20 entrants were divided up into two grades of 10; a total of 10 heats for each grade.

We certainly haven’t heard of the same format before. It seemed to go down very well with riders and spectators. The only voice of dissent heard was that of Dave Clark, who either needs to do some interval training, or needs to complain more quietly!

B-Grade came down to a final between David Jagger, Tim Hall, Rod Stewart and Uschi Steedman; Steedman proved too strong to win clearly from Hall, Stewart and Jagger.

A-Grade saw Tim Ross, Steve Plummer, Darren Bakker and Bruce Halket make it through to the final. In the closest finish of the night, Bakker managed to come around Halket on the line to take the win by a wheel. Ross took third ahead of Plummer.

Many thanks to Stewart Buslines for their sponsorship of the new race and their well-received prize money. Thanks also to Leonie, Lisa, Loretta, Annie and Di for officiating; and to all the spectators who lined the course at the finish line!

The MMBCC’s Summer Series continues on Thursday 21 February with the Bakker Plumbing Handicap on Howes Creek Road; starting at the Lord’s Ground. This is another of the club’s feature races of the summer with $300 of prize money up for grabs. Entries via SMS to 0428 503 437 by 8pm Wednesday 20 February please.

Cheers,

Bruce.

Thursday 24 January - Whitfield Road

MMBCC race report

The first Handicap race of 2013 saw Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling Club members line up for the start at the Botanic Park on Thursday 24 January for 25km out to Sawpit Gully Road and back.

A stiff northerly headwind greeted the 16 riders. This brought a smile to the faces of the Scratch group riders; the headwind would theoretically favour them over the rest of the field. However, it would mean a very fast, return leg with such a strong tailwind.

First away was Tony Morris as the lone Limit rider off 17 minutes, followed by: Julie Dolling off 10.00; David Bock, Tim Hall and Tony Williams off 7.00; Steve Flew, John Lithgow, Tony Hausknecht and Christine Hopkins off 4.30; Chris Washusen, Bob Beattie and Will MacDonald made up the ‘Chopping Block’ off 4.00; and Scratch consisted of Ross Hopkins, Stefan Vaivars, Josh Hopwood and Bruce Halket.

With only 30 seconds separating Block and the group ahead, it was always likely these two groups would join together early, which they did. Good teamwork meant the seven worked well together into the wind.

Subsequently, Scratch rode all the way to the turnaround without catching anyone, making a mockery of their supposed advantage into the headwind.

Even before the turn, however, Scratch could see Morris still had a very healthy lead and would be difficult to catch.

Then the Indian connection kicked in.

The Hopkins’ have just returned from three weeks cycling in India and the fitness was evident on the way back into town. Christine had been working hard in the Block but Ross really turned the screws after the turn. It even proved too much for Hopwood who was dropped from Scratch just after Long Lane.

As Scratch neared their prey, Hopwood managed to will himself back into the group and took a huge turn up the Barwite Hill. Then Hopkins took over and, after a massive turn on the front which must have lasted a kilometre, attacked the Block group on the ‘Possums’ Hill and put a gap on them straight away.

Meanwhile, Morris quietly went about destroying the field. He crossed for the win 40 seconds clear in a time of 55.44.

Scratch stayed clear of Block despite Washusen and Hausknecht finally remembering what they were meant to do with their pedals. Halket took second ahead of Hopwood, Hopkins and Vaivars. But not far back were Beattie, MacDonald, Hausknecht, Washusen and Williams the final point scorer of the top ten.

As the first Scratchie home, Halket took fastest time of 39.24 and was awarded the Alpine Butchery award, possibly out of pity. Many thanks to Dave and Carol.

Many thanks also to Helen, Margaretanne, Dave, John, Darryl and George for volunteering and officiating and to the Hotel Delatite for the liquid post mortems.

The MMBCC’s Summer Series continues on January 31 with the notorious Black & Tan - a road race taking in a couple of dirt road sections. Sponsored by the SCODY High Country Cycle Challenge, the winner will win a free entry into the SHCCC on March 16 & 17, plus souvenir jersey and knicks. Entries via SMS to 0428 503 437 by 8pm Wednesday 30 January please.

Thursday 20 December - Handicap Race - Whitfield Road (course number 06) - 25km

MMBCC race report - by Bruce Halket.

Cash! The lure of the filthy lucre brought out a large field of 32 riders for the MMBCC’s Hotel Delatite Christmas Handicap on Thursday 20 December on the Mansfield-Whitfield Road. The Hotel had generously donated a whopping $300 in prize money; plus more from the club made a total prize pool of $400!

Ten and a half minutes separated the lone Limit rider, Tony Morris, from the lone Scratch rider, Mitch Greenway. But in between were 30 other ‘money-hungry’ riders in six groups.

The biggest group, of seven, was ‘the Chopping Block’ which consisted of Mauro Brega, Bruce Halket, Andrew Gerrans, Stefan Vaivars, Laurie Harding, Ross Hopkins and Tom MacMunn. Mitch’s results in recent weeks have clearly shown he’s in very good form but giving this group of 7 a 30-second head start on a windy evening would prove difficult.

All groups started well, assisted by a reasonably strong southerly breeze. Even so, there were still a few early casualties of the hot pace: both Vaivars and Harding from Block and Tim Ross from the group ahead. The remains of Ross’ group - Darren Bakker, Josh Hopwood, Rob Greenway and Foley Lachal - were caught by Block just before the turnaround at Sawpit Gully Road; Mitch lurked just off the back and looked strong...

However, the second half of the race back into Mansfield proved Mitch’s undoing. On his own into a headwind trying to catch a group of 9 working well together proved a bit too difficult, even for him.

Block rolled turns into the headwind and had caught all the rest of the field by the Barwite Road hill, with about 2km to go! A large group of ‘passengers‘ on the back and a bit of jockeying for position meant a large, potentially dangerous sprint finish looked likely.

However, in a great move, MacMunn and Brega attacked on the last hill and opened a good lead. Etiquette dictates that in Handicap races, anyone that starts in your group is your team-mate until 200 metres from the finish - with no-one from Block prepared to chase down their team-mates, MacMunn and Brega had what looked to be a race-winning lead.

Chris Washusen had a try but couldn’t bridge the gap. Then Mick Feeney had a big ‘go’ and got the bunch a bit closer. Just after Redgum Court, Gerrans and Bakker turned on the afterburners and sprinted side by side to the line! Gerrans took the win by the narrowest of margins.

Halket took third ahead of Steve Plummer, Rob Greenway, Hopwood, Brega held on for 7th, Hopkins, Washusen and Feeney rounded out the top ten places. Thanks to the Hotel Delatite, they were all rewarded with a bit of Christmas spending money. Presentations back at the hotel also saw fastest time awarded to Gerrans (37min 49secs; an average of over 40km/h!)

Many thanks to our volunteers and officials: Julie, Jenny, Fiona, Rachel, Leonie, Tony and George. The Alpine Butchery voucher was awarded to George Chalk for his never-ending help with marshalling and officiating.

The MMBCC’s Summer Series resumes in 2013 on Thursday 17 January on the same ‘Tolmie Road’ course. Entries via SMS to 0438 513 355 by 8pm Wednesday 16 January please.
