Tuesday 3 December - Dirt Crits Race 8

Dirt Crits Race 8- 3rd December 2013

Junior Event

Tuesday night saw all riders trying to chase down their lap times with Hunter Reeve and Elise Empey successful in achieving new PB’s.
Juniors are also welcome to have a Christmas theme on their bikes or person.
The last event for this season, a pairs race, will be held next Tuesday 10th December- Registration 5:15pm and event start at 5:30pm.

By Kate Empey

Senior Event

On Tuesday 3rd December the eighth event in the Dirt Crits Spring/Summer Series was held at Riflebutts Reserve.

Flynn Bowker and Dave Empey ran the event, Cam Lachal put out the bunting and Katie Bowker looked after the finances and memberships- Great work!

Sixteen riders competed this week. It was seventeen, however Rod Sargeant had a mechanical failure on the start line so was unable to compete- better luck next week.

As many of the riders have been competing regularly, their times are becoming more consistent. Each week Brett Stevens and Mike Davies have a close competition, with only a few seconds separating the pair. Brett crossed the line a mere 8 seconds in front of Mike this week! Rachel Grundy was only 5 seconds behind Mike on paper.

One rider that continues to improve their lap time each week is Will Grundy. Will is now lapping the course over 2-minutes per lap better than he was at the start of the season- Well done Will!

Foley rode strongly this week and looked aggressive out on the course. Kian was riding fast, however he came into the start finish area looking a bit wide eyed after eyeing a species of the slithering variety on the track.

Results-
1st Brett Stevens- 25:45 (4 laps)
2nd Mike Davies- 25:53 (4 laps)
3rd Rachel Grundy- 26:58 (4 laps)

The current points standing to date is-

1st place- Anthony Plummer and Mike Davies- 156 points
2nd place- April Lachal- 142 points
3rd place- Noah Lachal- 114 points

The last race for this season will be held next Tuesday 10th December- Registration 5:45pm and event start at 5:6:00pm (course 2).

Cam Lachal has some plans for the last race of the Spring Season, so it will be good to see this come together.

Duty Roster
Senior event- Dave Empey and Flynn Bowker.

Tuesday 26 November - Dirt Crits Race 7

Dirt Crits Race 7 - Tuesday 26th November 2013

Junior Event

Thirteen juniors raced on another dusty afternoon. By the end of 4 laps six riders recorded new personal best times (PBs). In particular, Zali Vaivars improved on her previous PB by nearly three minutes! Great work Zali!

All riders performed will and their times have been very consistent, so congratulations to all!

The next race will be on Tuesday 3rd December- Registration 5:15pm and event start at 5:30pm.

By Kate Empey

Senior Event

On Tuesday 26th November the seventh event in the Dirt Crits Spring/Summer Series was held at Riflebutts Reserve.

As the course is drying out, some of the braking areas are turning into talcum powder, making them very slippery.

A couple of the riders have incidents- one over the handlebars and another into a tree!

I’m not sure what the handicapper was thinking, but there seemed to be a lot of riders that finished at vastly different times this week!

Thanks to Jodie Batchelor and Nick Howland for running the event this week.

Results-
1st April Lachal- 32:34 (4 laps)
2nd Flynn Bowker- 30:56 (4 laps)
3rd Rod Sargeant- 37:03 (3 laps)

The current points standing to date is-

1st place- April Lachal- 130 points
2nd place- Anthony Plummer- 125 points
3rd place- Mike Davies- 116 points

The second last race for this season will be held next Tuesday 3rd December- Registration 5:45pm and event start at 5:6:00pm (course 2).

Cam Lachal has some plans for the last race of the Spring Season, so it will be good to see this come together.

Duty Roster
Senior event- Dave Empey and Flynn Bowker.

Dirt Crits Race 5- 12th November 2013

Junior Event

Although the wet weather caused the cancelation of the seniors on Nov 12th, the juniors still arrived keen to race, so race they did in the wet conditions. Their times were considerably slower but there was no dust to contend with.

Dirt Crits Race 6- 19th November 2013

Junior Event

Nov 19th saw a much warmer and dustier night resulting in a number of crashes. A number of riders finished covered in dust from one or more falls, but no one was hurt and the usual smiles were on show at the end of the four laps.

All riders are riding faster than the first week, with some showing lots of improvements.

Charlie Hutchinson is commended on his great sportsmanship by stopping and helping another rider with their chain.

The next race will be on Tuesday 26th November- Registration 5:15pm and event start at 5:30pm.

Tuesday October 29 - Dirt Crits Race 4

Dirt Crits Race 4- 29th October 2013

The fourth event of the Dirt Crits Spring/Summer series was held at Riflebutts Reserve MTB Park on Tuesday 29th October.

Junior Event

All juniors participated extremely well this week with all riders beating their previous times. Some improved by 30 sec and others by as much as 2-3 minutes, over the same course!

They have shown great sportsmanship, yet remained very competitive.

There were even a few disappointed groans when they were informed we will have a week off for the long weekend, but they were encouraged to have a social ride instead.

Racing will resume on Tuesday 12th November- Registration 5:15pm and event start at 5:30pm.

By Kate Empey

Senior Event

Twenty-four riders participated in the senior event on Course 1. Many of these are junior members of the club that choose to challenge themselves each week by riding in the senior event, including Matthew Empey, Noah Lachal and Jai Lerch-MacKinnon. Also, Flynn and Dylan Harding’s dad, Cam, decided to have a go at Dirt Crits this week- Great work!

Cam Lachal marked the course again, and explained it to the riders- Thanks. (If you have any bunting you could donate to Dirt Crits, I’m sure that Cam would appreciate it).

It was great to see the racing from a different perspective this week- as a rider, rather than as an organiser. Thanks Kieren and Trevor for running the event. A few things stood out for me- The good sportsmanship shown by riders of all standards when overtaking riders, or being overtaken by them, and the encouragement shown to riders when going through the start/finish area and on the course.

Results-
1st Nick Watson- 23:49 (2 laps)
2nd Flynn Bowker- 24:23 (3 laps)
3rd Rod Sargeant- 32:40 (3 laps)

After a count back, the current points standing for races 1, 2, 3 and 4 are-

1st place- Anthony Plummer- 89 points
2nd place- Noah Lachal- 84 points
3rd place- Mike Davies- 81 points

Next Dirt Crits
We will have a break from Dirt Crits next Tuesday, due to Melbourne Cup day.

Racing will resume on Tuesday 12th November- Registration 5:45pm and event start at 6:00pm (course 2).

Duty Roster
Senior event- Brett Stevens and Mike Davies.

Tuesday 22 October - Dirt Crits Race 3

Dirt Crits Race 3- 22nd October 2013

The third event of the Dirt Crits Spring/Summer series was held at Riflebutts Reserve MTB Park on Tuesday 22nd October.

Junior Event Twelve riders started the junior event. Ellie Parks and Flynn Harding were two new `Come and Try it´ riders. The event ended up being a close finish with Jonty Vaivars improving his time from last week and finishing 1st in 16.53, Kody Appleton 2nd in 16.56 and Flynn Harding 3rd in 17.02. Race registration next Tuesday is at 5:15pm for a 5:30pm start.

Senior Event The Mansfield Mount Buller Cycling Club had many riders representing it over the weekend at the Elevation series at Barjarg, THULE 24Hr MTB race at Bright and the Victorian Enduro Series- Race 6 at Beaconsfield. As a result, there would have been some tired legs on the course. However, that didn´t seem to dampen the riders´ enthusiasm. Three new riders tried out in the senior event- Dylan Harding, Brandon Smith and Nick Watson- Well done boys! This week, after some deliberation, the handicapper chose to put the three fastest riders, Mitch Greenway, Kian Lerch-MacKinnon and Foley Lachal, off the same handicap, with April Lachal starting off at the same time. This resulted in a close start, and if Kian´s chain hadn´t slipped, it would have been an even closer affair entering the single track. Mitch and Kian worked well together during the race, pulling away from Foley, who was having mechanical issues. Special mention needs to go to Brett Stevens who continues to improve each week. Results- 1st Dylan Harding in a time of 30:45 over 4 laps ($30 gift voucher to Alpine Butchery)2nd Noah Lachal a time of 28:44 over 3 laps 3rd Matthew Empey in a time of 32:01 over 3 laps

The current points standing for races 1, 2 and 3 are as follows- 1st place- Justin Sargeant- 78 points2nd place- Noah Lachal- 77 points3rd place- Anthony Plummer- 71 points See you next Tuesday for registration at 5:45pm and the event starts at 6:00pm (course 1).

Race Fees 3-12 years old $2 per week, 13+ years old - $4 per week.

Victorian Enduro Series- Round 6- Beaconsfield

Kian Lerch-MacKinnon and Foley Lachal teamed up to race round 6 of the Victorian Enduro Series at Beaconsfield. The event is held over 6hrs, with team mates tagging through the transition area.

Quoting from Kian´s Facebook report- `Awesome day of racing down at Beaconsfield today, ... coming 2nd Place in 6Hr Male Pairs. They have some great trails down there, nice and technical. ... Foley ...got us off to a great start, sitting comfortably in 2nd and then in 3rd on our first lap, then I passed 2nd and on Foley´s second lap he got a flat, putting us back to 4th, but we managed to come back and finish 2nd place overall...´

15 October 2013 - Dirt Crits Race 2

The second event of the Dirt Crits Spring/Summer series was held at Riflebutts Reserve MTB Park on Tuesday 15th October.

The school presentations seem to be having a positive effect on Junior entries, as they doubled to twenty this week! More presentations will be held during the week, so fingers crossed, there should be some more smiling faces lining up at the start line next week.
All of the children had a great time! If interested, race registration is at 5:15pm for a 5:30pm start.

Fiona Greenway streamlined the starting sheet for the Senior event, so this was the first opportunity to try it out. It worked well so we’ll continue to use it, and tweak it, for future races- Thanks Fiona.
Twenty-one riders started the event, a great mix of junior and senior riders.

Results- 1st Toby H in a time of 25:42 over 3 laps, 2nd Nick H in a time of 28:44 over 3 laps and 3rd Andrew W in a time of 34:51 over 4 laps. All of the place getters received prizes, including a $30 gift voucher to Toby from one of the club’s sponsors, Alpine Butchery.

Next Tuesday the race will be held on course 3.

Thanks to Tom for marking the three different race courses on the Riflebutts map, which will be put on display at each race, and also permanently displayed on the board under the shelter.

See you next Tuesday for registration at 5:45pm and the event starts at 6:00pm.

9th October 2013 - Dirt Crits Race 1

Dirt Crits Race 1- 9th October 2013

On Tuesday night the first event of the Dirt Crits Spring/Summer series was held at Riflebutts Reserve MTB Park in beautiful race conditions.

Kate ran the juniors event. Ten riders wheeled the start line and were chomping at the bit to get out and smash the coure! Included in this number were some newcomers to Dirt Crits. All enjoyed the event, including the treat afterwards.

Hopefully there will be many more new juniors over the next few weeks, after presentations will be held at school assemblies. Thanks to the following people for offering their time to do this- David Jagger, John Eisner, Jason Parker, Kate Empey, Carole McCluskey and also some children. Also, thanks to all the people that gave Jason photos to use in the presentation, and to Nick Howland for his video clip.

After the junior event, Kate asked them for some feedback and they gave her some great ideas, including having a points table to chart their own improvement over time.

A large field of twenty-seven riders lined up for the senior Irish handicap race, including some newcomers. It was a difficult task for the handicapper, as there had been such a big break since the last race.

Here are the results- 1st Justin Sergeant in a time of 32:55:12 over 3 laps, 2nd Anthony Plummer in a time of 32:38:96 over 4 laps, 3rd Mike Davis in a time of 35:03:77 over 4 laps.

It was quite evident post-race that some riders had put their bikes away over the Winter period and replaced them with their skis, while others had gotten in some 'secret squirrel' training.

Thanks to the following people for contributing to make the event such a success-
Kate- Junior event, Dave- registration, Fiona- time keeping and recording, and Cam- bunting the course.

Jason also mentioned that there are a number of positions that need to be filled to ensure that Dirt Crits can run smoothly. More information to follow.

Next week the plan will be to race on Course 2.

MTB Update - 19 November 2012

Monday 19th November Dirt Crits Report MMBCC

So another Monday afternoon rolled around as the MMBCC MTB riders gathered for Dirt Crits at Rifle Butts reserve. A few noticeable faces missing from the crowd for various reasons sure kept things exciting, and allowing for some to take their chance for glory.

Once all names were down on paper close to 30 racers set off a various intervals and the dust was soon flying. Racing again in the Irish Handicap format most were pleasantly surprised (well a few C-graders at least) that the course bunting officials had mistakeingly shortened the evenigs race track by eliminating Bogans Beginnings.

If you found yourself third or fourth in a train of riders you were eating dust for most of the night with minimal rainfall over the past few weeks to dampen the course. This also made for nervous times behind the bars whilst boosting into some dusty corners.

Tom Macmunn was seen on more than one occasion on the side of the track scrathing his head and muttering words about the trials and tribulations of riding a single speed. His night was done early.

Once all was done and most certainly dusted we had a top three with two Mt Buller riders taking home two of the top spots. In third place Chris Morecroft, second in what we believe to be his first Crit’s race Kieren Payne, congatulations and watch your handicap next week Kieren. And in first after only deciding to race after 4.30pm and taking a late entry handicap was Andrew Railton.

See you all next Monday. And our officials will be Uschi, Kate and Katie (just a friendly reminder).

MTB Update

It was the first race of the Spring Summer series for the kids and there was a great turnout with 12 racing.

Well done to all the little tackers in getting their legs spinning again after winter. It was great to see their smiling faces on the track again.

Adults race there was a good mix of junior riders and not-so junior riders, with 18 in total racing. It was great to see new faces and some old ones back after the long winter break.Chris Morecroft ‘wowed’ the crowd with a trackstand start to kick-start the Adults Race.Ewen Macaskill strained a heart muscle after only 3 of this planned 4 laps. Most of the crowd considered this just sandbagging in front of the handicapper so he gets an easier 'mark' next race.

Ava Kappas had a spill but braved it out to cross the finish line, which was really impressive.Frank David was probably wishing he'd been on his new, faster bike, instead of his heavy, old, slow one - he might have gotten past Katie Moore and onto the podium.Great effort by Nick Howland and Matthew Empey at keeping the seniors at bay and cruising through to the finish line to take first and second places!

A big thanks to Alpine Butchers for their generous support in sponsoring first prize.

Duty roster is now up on the website. Please have a look for when you are rostered on. If you cannot make it, please arrange to swap with another person. Once arranged, please advise Katie Moore of change.Monday nights at Riflebutts Reserve. Kids races register at 5:15pm for 5:30pm race,Adults register at 5:45 for 6:00pm race.

See you next week!

MTB Update - 17 April 2012

Mt Buller Road and Mountain Bike Social Rides – MTB update

An 8am round of lattes at Mirimbah Store prior to a shuttle up to the heady delights of Mt Buller – is there any better way to finish the summer season of mountain biking?  After some brief discussions on route options and some group photos, upwards of 25 hooping and hollering mountain bikers headed up One Tree Hill and down Gang Gangs where the first crash of the day was claimed by Foley Lachal!!  All smiles though at the skills park and time for people to head off on their chosen route to Mirimbah Park for lunch.

Routes ranged from the fast and flowing delights of Cornhill followed by the descent of the Delatite River Trail, to those who headed out to Mt Stirling to complete the gruelling but awesome 10k loop of Stonefly before taking the River Spur Trail down the mountain. As everyone arrived back at Mirimbah there was plenty of sweat, smatterings of mud (and blood), but most of all lots of grinning – what a great morning of riding!!  Special mention should go to the following participants though:

Jason Parker for making it to the bottom in time for lunch despite 3 punctures including front and rear at the same time!!

Katie Moore for the most impressive stack of the day, even if no one saw it – when you get up and have to look for your bike you know it has been a big one!

And finally to Tina McDonnell for beating the likes of Shannon, Tom, Laurie, Cam, Foley and Frank down the River Spur Trail – you’ll be a marked woman at the first dirt crits event!!

All the excitement was followed by a great effort to cook all of the great bbq food supplied by Mirimbah Store – a big thanks to all those who to a shift with an apron and tongs!  And what a spread they put on – it was clear that the mornings activities had brought on some serious appetites.  It was a welcome opportunity to mingle with the road side of the club especially given that everyone had travelled to Mirimbah by pedal power!

After lunch was the job of presentations for the summer series dirt crits – and it still felt like summer sitting in the sun in Mirimbah Park!!  Before the overall series winner prize was handed out, the following awards were given out:

The Mums Who Ride Award went to Paula McMunn, Kate Empey and Kerren McNamara for coming to dirt crits every week with there kids and racing too!!

The Mr Consistent Award went to Jason Parker for his ability to set his speed at the outset of each race and maintain that same speed the whole way through!

The Stepping Up Award went to Jem Davies for starting late in the series and quickly stepping up from the kids race category up to the Adults D grade where he performed very well taking a number of race wins

The Red Cordial Award for the person with the most amount of energy went to Foley Lachal who for example raced in dirt crits the day after completing the 100k Otway Odyssey!

A special award was given to Tom MacMunn for his considerable efforts over the last few years in administering and improving the Dirt Crit Series.  Thanks again Tom for all your efforts!

So on to the big prize of Series winner, the top ten were as follows with Dave Bock taking out the honours after a great effort – excellent riding Dave!

1 Dave Bock

2 Kian Lerch-McKinnon

3 Tom MacMunn

4 Jason Parker

5 Paul MacNamara

6 Foley Lachal

7 Chad Meek

8 Paula MacMunn

9 Cameron Lachal

10 Nicholas Howland

Well done to everyone and great to see yet more young riders coming through the ranks.

A big thank you to everyone who turned up on Sunday and to all those who have helped out throughout the Summer Series.  Lookking forward to seeing everyone back in action for the Autumn Series starting on Sunday 22nd April – see you there!

MTB Update - Monday 26 March 2012

Dirt Crits Update – 26 March

We had a fantastic turnout for the Little Person/Big Person social race on Monday night with approximately 50 people gathered at Riflebutts Reserve, ready for a fun night of racing.

The evening began with a ‘reccie lap’ of the course and then the little people were teamed up with a big person. After brief introductions it was time to race! The air was filled with excitement, laughter and a few streaks of competitiveness as the little people raced off to do their first lap. The ‘Big People’ waited anxiously in the change-over area until tagged by their team mate, and then they were off for a larger loop of the course.  Two laps were completed by both team members and it was great to see a sea of smiling faces at the end of the race.

Drink bottles were handed out by Kirsten Linguard from Active Scotland, along with some information on the Active Families challenge, which begins on 01 April. We were also very fortunate to have some wonderful organic fruit donated by Hoffman’s Holistic Produce (open Thursdays from 12:30pm at the ‘veg shed’ on Malcolm street). The bananas and pears certainly kept everyone fuelled up for the race! Thanks to everyone for a great end to the Summer Series of Dirt Crits.

The Autum Series will kick off on Sunday 22 April at 2pm at Riflebutts. Keep an eye out for more info on the website.

Upcoming events:

Sunday April 15 – Combo Social ride at Buller! MTB crew to do some biking on Mt Buller the Road crew to cycle out from Mansfield, with both ending up at Mirrimbah and for a BBQ lunch at 1:30pm. If you are keen to join in the festivities, please contact either Katie Moore 0415 369 297 or Margaret-Anne

Saturday May 12 – Six Hours In The Saddle (SHITS) race at Beechworth. Interested in getting a team together? Contact Katie (0415 369 297) or Shannon (0409 552 564) to register your interest.

Other news:

The Bike Buller team (Chad, Yully, Cam and Foley - stepping in for Dave Empey) raced at the Mont 24hr race in Canberra over the weekend. The boys put in another stellar effort coming 7th in their team of 4 category (out of approx 180 teams) and finishing 22nd overall, out of approximately 600 teams. Brilliant effort guys! They will certainly be a team worth watching at the SHITS race in May.

MMBCC MTB Update - 19 March 2012

Dirt Crit Update 19/03/12

Well a beautiful Monday afternoon and a cracking track after the recent rains brought the riders out in storm, with 9 in the kids race and 22 in the last of the Irish handicap races of the Summer Series.  It seems that as the summer has progressed into early autumn everyone is gaining fitness and speed making handicapping a bit of a challenge!  Taking out the win this week was Frank David who will surely be doing five laps the next time we race!  The next three over the line were young Flyn Bowker, Jai Lerch-McKinnon and Matthew Empey all of who are improving very quickly – great to see some even younger stars of the future up in the adult field!

Fresh from his travels (and successes) Mitch was unable to catch everybody but lead home a close pack of riders including Rob (You nearly stayed in front of him!!), Kian, Chad, Kate Empey, Tom McMunn, Foley and Cam (again the young’un taking the honours) – all of them finishing within a minute of each other!  All in all a great night of racing and brilliant to see some new faces taking part.

We hope to see more new faces next week for our “Little Person/Big Person race”. This will be a fun event, part of the Active Families challenge, in collaboration with Active Mansfield. If you ever wanted to try out mountain biking, this is the time to come along and see what it’s all about! Take part in a social ride around Riflebutts Reserve or have a crack at the race! MMBCC MTB Update - 12 March 2012

Dirt Crits Write-up 12/03/12

Bike Buller Festival

It was a massive weekend at the Bike Buller Festival with a great Mansfield and Mt Buller contingency, consisting of the Bike Buller team (Yully, Chad, Cam & Dave Empey), Tom, Foley and Kian. All local riders ‘smashed it’! A truly fantastic effort, with riders taking part in a number of races over the long weekend.

There were a few tumbles and lucky near misses with Cam taking a bit of a blow to the head, Yully taking a chunk out of his knee and Chad winning a prize for the most amusing injury(?!!)

(Please note: times for the Brake Burner were unavailable at time of writing)

Foley scooped up a host of prizes and finished 2nd overall in the Under 18 category. Foley took 2nd in the 50k race (3:33) and 3rd in the 25k race (1:36). Well done Foley!

Dave Empey took 1st place in the 30k race (40-49 category) with a finishing time of 2:32, and in the 25k race came 7th (1:36).

Kian Lerch-Mckinnon finished 1st in the 30k race (U 18 category) with a time of 3:01, and 4th in the 25k race (1:43).

Chad finished 8th in the 30k race (18-39 category) – 3:11, and 41st in the 25k race (1:38).

Cam came 27th in the 30k race (18-39 category) with a time of 3:46. Then, after recovering from his pretty spectacular tumble, came 108 in the 25k race (2:08).

Yully took 68th place in the 50k race (18-39 category) with a time of 3:55, and 30th in the 25k race (1:33).

Tom finished 16th in the 30k race (18-39 category) with a time of 3:28

Awesome effort and big congratulations to all the competitors – makes you really proud! Well done!! For full result details please see the Rapid Ascent website:

Dirt Crits:

Monday night saw the second round of the “Irish Handicap” series. There was a smaller crowd, to be expected after a big weekend of racing at Bike Buller Festival, but a competitive field non-the-less!

A few thrills and spills with Tom coming off his cyclo-cross bike, Laurie jack-knifing on a turn whilst chasing Tom, and last week’s winner Jem Davies losing his chain and taking him back a few places, which was a shame.

It was a tight race with Dave Moore and Jason sharing the lead and battling it out for 1st place. Fantastic ride by Paula MacMunn too!

1st place: Dave Moore (who swears he didn’t rig the handicapping!) – 4 laps, 34:10

2nd place: Jason Parker – 4 laps, 34:20

3rd place: Paula MacMunn – 3 laps, 34:41

Next week will be the 3rd and final race of the “Irish Handicap” series (for the Summer series at least!). Come along for a great ride. Come on Stefan, you know you want to have a go!

Duty: Kerryn McNamara & Jason Parker

Little person, Big person race:

The last race of the Summer series (Monday 26 March) we are looking to hold a ‘taster race’ for anyone looking to try out Mountain biking, specifically geared towards the younger ones. To be held in conjunction with Active Mansfield. Details being confirmed at the moment so stay tuned!

Upcoming events:

Murrindindi Cycle club are organising a MTB holiday to Forrest (home of the Otway Odyssey) over the Easter weekend. The group are planning to stay at the caravan park in Forrest, and plenty of riding and fun are scheduled for the weekend! For more info and to register your interest, please contact Jason Parker 0439 108 832.

If you have any events you would like to share on the MTB page of the MMBCC website, please contact Katie Moore 0415 369 297.

MMBCC MTB Update 5 March 2012

MMBCC MTB Update 05/03/12

A snazzy new race format was unveiled on Monday night by Dave Moore : The graded handicap combo race! Unlike a normal handicap race this format meant that D-graders only had to race 3 laps of the course, while C – A graders raced 4 laps, making it more inclusive and fun for all involved. It took a fair bit of initial organising and mathematical calculations, but the overall feedback was that it was a success!

It was interesting to see A graders and D graders setting off at the same time, racing each other but keeping in the back of your mind that the A graders had to do an extra lap in order to beat their starting competitors.

Big congratulations to the ever improving Jem Davies. At just 12 years old he took out the win holding off the charging Tina McDonnell and Laurie Harding.

1st: Jem Davies (3 laps) 28:37

2nd: Tina McDonnell (3 laps) 28:43

3rd: Laurie Harding (4 laps) 29:44

Lots of smiling faces at the end and we finished at the respectable time of 7pm! There was even time for a socialise at the end (and time to see Tina in her beasty 4x4  wrench Frank’s car out of a ditch!)

A winning format all round and one that we will continue with for the rest of the summer series, which concludes at the end of March. Next week will see an extra twist to the format with A-graders to complete 5 laps of the course.

The Autumn series and calendar is due to be confirmed this week at the MTB sub-committee meeting. So, stay tuned!

Kate Empy and Cam Lachal on duty next week. Please be there before 5:45pm to register.

Enjoy the week ahead and all the best to all those racing at the Bike Buller Festival this weekend! There will be quite a few of us heading up there so get in contact if you would like to take part in the festivities.

MMBCC MTB Update 21/02/12

MMBCC MTB Update 21/02/12

Good turnout at Dirt Crits this week, despite the rain, and I must say the track was pretty sweet!

There were 12 entries in the kids race and lots of big smiles out on the track, along with some extraordinary gorilla noises from Jamieson MacNamara – think there may be a Yully protégé on the way there!  Well done to all kids for a great race.

The Adults had a graded scratch race this week incorporating  a new section of the track called ‘Bogan’s beginnings’, created by students at the High school with guidance from Shannon . Great work team!

D grade winners were Jem Davies 25:07, Paula McMunn 27:13 and Kate Empy 26:57. C & A grade did a longer loop which cut into ‘rubbish run’ for a super-fun loop! C grade winners were Will MacDonald 26:01, Dave Bock 26:01 and Ben Annear (after stopping to assist a fellow team-mate after a stack) 27:06. B-grader Dave Moore joined the A grade race this week doing 5 laps of the course – good effort! An exciting sprint finish was displayed by Chad and Mitch with Chad taking 1st place 32:57 and Mitch 32:58. 3rd place went to Laurie Harding 36:17. Well done everyone on a great race!

Next week will be a handicap race kicking off at 6pm sharp.  Please be there 15 minutes before to register with your MTBA licence. Kate Empy and Rob Greenway on duty.

A BIG ‘well done’ should also be extended to Chad, Foley, Cam, Jason and Dave Empy who participated in the Kona Odyssey race in Forrest on the weekend.  The boys took part in either the 100k or 50k challenge and by all accounts did very well!  Results can be found on the Kona Odessy website  (www.otwayodyssey.com )

Mitch will be taking part in the Australian MTB championships this weekend, to be held in Adelaide, and then off to Newcastle next Wednesday for round 4 of the National Series. Go Mitch!!

Upcoming events:

Lake Mountain Granite Grind this weekend, 25 February: http://lakemountainresort.com.au/latest-news/granite-grind

Snowy Triple Trail MTB Challenge, 7 & 8 April, Snowy Mountains, Jindabyne NSW: http://www.rollingground.com.au/ . MTB - Tolmie Sports

Saturday saw the sun come out in just as much force as the locals at the Tolmie Sports Day. The whole day was a hustle and bustle of activities that tickled the eyes and underarms of all ages.

Axes were swung in the centre ring with vigour all day while kids smashed spuds as they rolled off the table. Others whittled little twigs, while some little miniature farm machines bailed hay to the amusement of all that saw. A talented bunch of horse riders tackled an obstacle coarse side by side and some extraordinary dogs showed that fences really are no obstacle for a bounding hound.

Just when you thought your eyes where full of good ol' county town entertainment the announcement came "The Three Man Challenge is about to begin"! I'd never seen an instant amalgamation quite like it. Everybody squashed by the sidelines to see the event unfold.

Beginning with the woodchoppers, who by this stage in the day must surely have tiered shoulders. They swang and chopped with more power and enthusiasm than you would see for the national title! Once chopping their block into pieces each axeman lumbered over with unstoppable momentum to tag their team mate. Off the runners went, in a tight bunch of chaos. Each arriving at a 35kg sack of happiness which they had to charge down a race and over the Tolmie Tavern truck, bumping and pushing and tumbling each other while attempting to scramble over the tray before dumping the sack and sprinting back down the race to tag the third and final challengers.
That's were our team of cycle powered expeditionaries were waiting in anticipation of tackling the almighty Tolmie Sports Ground Super Crits MTB Criterion Trail. With the race warming up it was that little green frog in the ATC top Foley Lachal to tag out first with not more than a second or two gap before the other ATC shirts of Cad Meek and Shannon Rademaker came bellowing up from behind.
Foley somehow managed to fend off the two giants through the back section until the final climbing bend where in front of the HUGE crowd Chad Meek made his most impressive passing blunder to date! Clipping the rear wheel while attempting a gentleman’s pass he sent himself sliding into the grass giving Foley the chance of a lifetime to perform his magic. Taking the win for his team in the black bibs, followed by Shannon Rademaker and Chad Meek managed to remount his bike and take out third for his team.

Well done to all the competitors as it truly was the spectacle of the day!

Cheers ATC for sponsoring the event, and the members of the MMBCC for participating and helping to make a fantastic day for all!
